Laminate floors (by Richard [MI]) Posted on: Sep 25, 2018 9:21 AM

I am in the process of helping my daughter install a click lock laminate floor at her place. We are experiencing small gaps in the length where the pieces meet. The ends are tight. The level indicates the floor is unlevel. She keeps wanting to undo previous rows to try and correct tiny gaps. This is causing chipping on the length side of the boards. We want them to be tight but I am concerned that repeated taking it apart and redoing them will result in damage to the boards. I don't want to have to buy 50% more boards. Any suggestions are appreciated. ( too bad it's not allure but it's her choice. --23.121.xx.xxx

Remove the planks and get the floor smooth first, a layer of plywood may be needed, clik floors unclik very easily. --76.188.xxx.xx

Maybe there is a problem with the laminate product. Pull the entire floor and return the floor to the store.

I agree Richard of MI laminate is a bad choice for floor especially if there is a water leak.

The best choice would be a click vinyl luxury floor. They loo so good when they are installed AND if there is a leak no worries.

Maybe install a self leveling product to help level the floor.

Not all laminate the same, but generally, when laminate sits in warehouses, it gets compressed and bowed, and no longer clicks and locks so easily.

Also, repeat unlocking and relocking will deteriorate the laminate planks to he point of worthlessness.

It all starts with a level floor. If it's a slab, a moisture barrier is a must. --99.59.x.xxx

Laminate floor, especially the less expensive stuff, requires the floor to be level. (Well, flat would be more accurate. No dips and hills.)

Are you using a block and rubber mallet to be sure they click together well? You may not be getting them actually clicked together correctly. --68.238.xx.xxx

Underpayment might reduce the pain.... laminate is a temporary floor.. a 2-10 year product.... I just tore out 700 sf of 4 year old laminate.. I'll never ever use laminate again! --174.234.xxx.xxx

On something like that, I'd like put in the TrafficMASTER Allure stuff. It flexes so it handles uneven floors well -- and it is water resistant so that you can even use it in kitchens and such. We've done tons of it in our rentals and at my in-laws place (dining room and kitchen) and it's been great.

My son installed laminate throughout his house in 2002, still looks new. But in rentals, hasn't worked out for us. Tenants RUIN it. --50.82.xxx.xx

I second #22.. With today's choice of wood look tiles, I would go for that (for rentals of course). or Allure

I just ripped out 4 rooms of laminate floor and went back to the original wood plank. We did laminate because the original wood had so many 1/8" plus gaps.. Now, Lowes sell caulking with different colors.. after a case of tan caulking, the floor looked decent and hard to destroy old wood floor (big gouge, no problem, a bead of tan caulking to cover it). Its a C-D property, obviously. --71.232.xxx.xxx
