Hi All, Tenants complain about a lot of Flies in the kitchen and bathroom. Tenants told me that I need to call exterminator. I ask the tenants if they use window screens when they open the window. They said they don't think flies come inside the house through the window when they open. They said the flies come from basement because it moisture. This tenants just move about a week. Any advice, suggestions or comments I appreciated. --208.54.xx.xxx

Were there any flies when this tenant moved in?

First make sure there are good screens on all windows. Tell the tenant not to leave doors without screen in open position.

Then try to find the source of the flies in the basement, kitchen and bath. When you do, treat them.

Lastly, check the house for cleanliness, food leftovers, uncovered trash cans, dirty floors and kitchen sink full of dirty dishes.

Oh I almost forgot, give the tenant a can of Flying Insect spray. --99.59.x.xxx

Jimmy,

What does your lease say?

My lease is clear: pest control is basic housekeeping and the responsibility of the resident.

Suggest they hang a few sticky fly paper strips in the basement and even on the ground floor. A sticky trap on top of the kitchen cabinets can help without being seen.

Just moved in tenants... yes you should assist. Perhaos the new fly eggs just hatched. I have experienced such. Spray for bugs and swat as many as you can. They will soon be gone. Go over there and see what they are experiencing ad crack open the wallet to help. You. Now. Go --99.203.xx.xxx

In my area the flies, ants and small pests have been a problem I attribute to the extended hot summer, I use a lot of stick traps and just purchased a bait box for mice - new thing for me, supposed to keep the dead ones outa sight. But most bug problems are tenant lifestyle so I hope you have this in your lease, anyone who thinks flies do not come in thru a window needs to explain this cost cutting tip to window world and several others. --76.188.xxx.xx

My lease says we are responsible for ONE treatment within the first 30 days, if reported. However, we are the ones who determine what is the appropriate treatment.

For flies, I would purchase a $3 fly swatter and let them have fun.

We had a really bad fruit fly infestation in our personal residence one year. Per online instructions, I built a trap that was a large bowl with a small amount of cheap red wine poured into the bottom and Saran wrap over the top with tiny holes poked in it (tooth pick size). Flies crawl in...then never get out! Something like that might also work for the common house fly. --173.20.xxx.xxx

For house flies outdoors I discovered that a bowl of chicken broth will cause them to fly in and drown. I had some older broth in the fridge and put it out for stray cats in the bottom of a gallon water bottle. I used my linoleum knife to cut the top of which makes a nice bowl out of the bottom. I put the broth in there for the cats and the next day the cats did not eat it because it was full of black flies. So I did that a couple more times and there are no flies out there. It's really gross looking so you should handle this yourself. You can put it out in the morning and no critters will get it then go back in the afternoon and discard them in the weeds. Or tell your tenants to do it, whatever. --73.178.xxx.xx

I have a vacant rental right now. For weeks there were drainflies all over the place. Then they mysteriously were all dead on the floor one day. I'm not sure what attracted them in the first place or why they all died. --72.188.xxx.xxx

Our daughter kept leaving our back door open so that the cats could go in and out while we were on vacation. Had tons of flies for about two weeks. I think they all hatched the day after she left to move to Chicago. --68.238.xx.xxx
