Closed on a rental recently. Each bedroom has one long walk to wall crack in the ceiling. The house is 65 years old. Any idea on the least painful way to fix them? Trying to avoid mudding and taping them if I can avoid it.....

Thanks --174.234.xxx.xxx

The largest plaster ceiling upstairs in my home has one. The last one is from an electrician installing some new wiring in the attic. I was there, heard the sound and the crack appeared in the center of the room. I have had them fixed at the rentals and yes, they are taped and joint compound is used over the tape and then the ceiling is repainted. I have one unit that has some kind of fibre tiles glued up there and I suspect it was done to cover a big ceiling crack. It's the larger rooms that get them. I guess some wood sagged above and put pressure on the plaster --73.178.xxx.xx

Caulk it and run a spackle knife down the caulk so it's nice and smooth and then paint it.

I would definitely push up and down along the seam to see if there are any weak spots, that could be loose or missing screws. If you have to screw anywhere, you'll be spackling it. Unless you get lucky and can caulk the screw head. --174.201.xx.xx

Each room with cracked plaster? Did you check the house for foundation issues before you bought it? --174.216.x.xx

Another alternative to caulk, is to use a utility knife and cut a V in the long crack to widen the crack line, then use fast drying spackle and you will good for years.

The wider V allows the spackle to fill the space and have a smoother finish. --108.243.xxx.xx

For small hairline cracks there is a product called "crack be gone" by goof off. You spray it on like paint and it is elastic enough to keep the crack from coming back. Paint over it. But that works only for cracks that you just see, but are not wide or deep.

For anything that is big enough to get a finger nail in, use Alex Painter's caulk by dap. That will usually have enough stretch to allow for the expansion and contraction that happens.

The best repair is digging it out and filling with coupound but that is a lot more work.

Dave [MO] has the correct answer. If the V groove is wider than 1/8", mesh should be added.

You can cut the mesh right in the middle, so you will have a 1" wide mesh instead of 2", it will take less joint compound. --99.59.x.xxx

#,

Paint the walls wild and crazy to attract their eye so they won't look up. Done.

i would add some spikes and paint it black, so it appears to be lightning on the ceiling... they will love it...

just kidding... settling? did you check basement supports, or is this slab or crawl space. Did you not notice when you looked at the home?

Put a penny on the floor in each room and they will not look up! LOL... Brad started it! LOL! --173.108.xxx.xx

In accordance with Dave Ramsey you get a latex caulk product and stitch some caulking runners along the cracks, now take out a credit card and smooth down this caulking, use a corner for a corner, gather excess and transplant to a new area - repeat as needed till all smooth and cracks are no longer seen, cut up the credit card and toss it into 2 trash cans, refinish as needed a day later. --76.188.xxx.xx

got to know which way the rafters run - most likely parallel to crack

- get a stud finder and locate the studs before you do anything
