I see a lot of apartments offer free cable/internet/wifi. How does a landlord get this installed for a 5 family. Do you actually have to pay per unit or can you set up the whole building? --24.34.xx.xxx

I have a 3 family where I have internet. I have students, so it's a good selling point. I have the internet for the whole house. You need a company that will give good internet speed, otherwise you will get constant calls about the signal dropping.

I pay a flat fee every month. Works for me as students love not having to buy internet service on their own.

I know there can be an issue with people downloading unauthorized material. Happened to me once...a student downloaded a song or a game or something else and I got an email from the provider telling me this.

I emailed the whole house and said this was illegal and could not happen again, otherwise I would cut off the internet to the house and they would have to be responsible for their own service. The student emailed me right away and said it was him, as I mentioned in my email what the content was. He had no idea it was illegal and apologized profusely. Never had an issue with that again. --32.215.xxx.xx

Not sure of the current day details but 9 years ago I got a DirecTV MDU (multi-dwelling-unit) account. I had to pay for satellite dish installation (1 dish feeds all units) and coax wiring to basement. In NJ, we can use the CATV wires from that point to individual apartments. About 28/m for 140 channels. I resell this for 40/m. HBO, sports packages are extra and billed per individual apt. HD is about 10/m extra. HD receivers have 1 time price of about 100 each. Bonus - they give us a "demo" receiver that gets all the movie channels for our "laundry" room. I think the minimum is a 4 or 5 unit building.

I also got internet from local CATV company, added a WIFI router and offer free WIFI. Nice selling features. --73.195.xxx.xxx

i have a lot of students where I used to have a wifi-gizmo feeding up to 4 users, now at a 6unit I provide a wifi that the router is set for 30 minutes then they get dropped - no problem, nearly every student now ports the signal thru the phone. --76.188.xxx.xx
