We've managed to get a couple rentals back that have fleas. Both have been treated by with a chemical treatment bought (and recommended by) a professional bug company. Did not work.

Went to Lowe's and bought something with a "money-back guarantee"...didn't work either. (Yes, both sprays had an IGR in them).

We are @ our wit's end-the same pro bug company that sold the first poison wants $200 to fumigate, BUT-the price includes a 3 month guarantee.

Anybody have any bright ideas???? --76.189.xxx.xxx

Diotomaceous earth. Cheap. Many garden stores carry it. Non toxic to people. There are two kinds. Don't use the pool filter type, use the other type. --23.121.xx.xxx

DE can get into your lungs and the lungs of others. Had some fleas at home last year. Adopted a rescue that the owner had already treated with a topical. It made her sick so I washed her several times to try to get it off her, but that stuff on one dog killed every flea in the house. The carpet has to come up and when that happens most of the problem will be gone. Basement could have them and that could be bombed if all pilot lights are off. Propellant for a lot if not most products now is propane which is extremely flammable. When it says on the can to shut off pilot lights, they are serious. There was propane in the teargas when the feds went into that compound in TX years ago and burnt all those people since they were using kerosene lamps. Woman from garden club lost a daughter and grand daughter in that mess. They are dead now also. --73.178.xxx.xx

DE works. It's a fine dust so yes, if you put it down wrong you can breath it in. Don't do that.

It works by shredding the exoskeleten of the flea (and other pests.) Google it.

It has to be food-grade, not pool stuff, and it can't get wet. --50.82.xxx.xx

I did multiple back-to-back flea bombings in a unit a few years back. Then a couple weeks later new tenants were complaining about flea bites. I should have come back several days later and bombed for the eggs that had now hatched. --24.20.xxx.xxx

Susan - The pro company should have probably told you that you want to treat the rental, wait a bit, then vacuum *daily* for weeks. They skip mentioning that step? Whoops. Ask them if they'll cut you a break since it's the second treatment...if you're sticking with them. Running the vacuum apparently makes the eggs hatch earlier, so the nymphs get exposed to the poison then die.

Also. Your rentals...you have a crawlspace? Might want to consider treating that too if so on this run.

Good luck. This is not fun. --96.28.xxx.xxx

The best treatment I've found is Borax Laundry Booster. Spread it on the carpet and the fleas breath it in and suffocate. Also treat the yard with it. Vacuum and spread again in the house for 2 weeks, and the fleas should be gone. I've been using this method since moving to Florida 38 years ago. --162.203.xxx.xxx

If the unit has carpet, remove it and the pad too. Get flea bombs and put one in each room. Wait 2-7 days and flea bomb again. If it cooler out, wait closer to 7 if it's warmer then you can shorten it to 2-3 day wait. Then do it a third time. I use this method a lot and have never had an issue with getting rid of the fleas. I would also spray my boots and pant legs with Adams flea spray before I entered the house since I didn't want to carry them home. --174.105.xxx.xxx

Susan, last summer I had a nightmare with fleas in 2 bed apartment that became vacant. I tried everything for 3 months...swept every morning, 7 days a week, for 3 months; tried 8 bombs each time for 7 times; used DE all over and let it set their for a month, had an exterminator out, and had diypestcontrol.com send me stuff (did not work) then they sent me different stuff for free...still did not work. Finally, after being a slave for 3 months, I found a pest control company that got rid of them...Patrick Pest Control out of Kenmore. I think you live in Canton if I remember right… So that would work perfectly for you. The husband and wife are a little bit unique… But they’re the only ones I trust to get rid of the bugs. By the way, this two bedroom apartment was all hardwood floors. It was definitely my nightmare… After 20 years of doing this I never experienced anything like that before. --142.54.xx.xxx

Another vote for diatomaceous earth. It is NOT a poison. It works mechanically. For that reason, the insects cannot develop an immunity. It works by getting into the soft tissue between the exoskeleton plates, cutting into that tissue. This results in the hymolymph (but blood) leaking out, resulting in desiccation. They basically, "bleed" to death. It is as if they were walking over a field of glass shards. This works for any crawling insect or mite, including roaches, bed bugs, ants, and scabies.

We put the DE in a container such as a powdered sugar shaker or cheese shaker. A handheld fertilizer spreader would also do for bigger jobs. There is no need to remove the carpeting. Just use a broom to work it in. Yo may wish to don a dust mask. Though no-toxic, DE can irritate the lungs, as a sharp particulate.

I have used DE successfully for roaches, fleas, ants and scabies. I advised my niece to use it for a bedbug infestation. BTW, I have spent a number of years working in a lab with insects, mostly Drosophila (fruit flies).

I've had fleas twice. Once was an indoor-only cat; the other one was a handyguy who was awesome, but stopped being awesome the moment he turned into my tenant, and reminded me why I don't break rules for people I like. I kicked out him and his dog... and they left me a memento.

In both cases, it took me about two months to get 100% rid of them.

The first time, I tried sprays and mothballs and bombs and poison and everything--- but while they made a difference, they didn't cure the problem.

I went back to my local pest control chemical company and asked if they had anything better than what they'd given me. I was able to talk to the owner this time, and he was a bit puzzled why the previous employee had sent me off with some mediocre stuff. He asked if the house was vacant, which it was, and sent me off with a pack of NuVan Pro Strips.

They did the trick.

Since then, NuVan Pro Strips have been part of my arsenal in getting rid of pests. I've used a bunch of them, and have perhaps come across one package that wasn't as potent as normal--- but normally, they're powerful enough stuff to be discouraged from being used around pets and perhaps infants.

So I'd definitely consider the DE--- and this time, not destroy a handy-vac by trying to vacuum it up! --and use it in conjunction with a pack or two of NuVan Pro Strips distributed throughout the house. --96.46.xxx.xx

My parents' Florida house kept getting fleas. The fleas came in through gaps in the aluminum tracks for windows on the screened-in porch, where the cat hung out - the cat never went outdoors, so the fleas came to her. The fleas were finally gotten rid of by: having a pro come in and spray, then thorough vacuuming every day, then a second treatment in about 2 weeks, then more vacuuming. It helped that we had to adopt the cat out after Mom died and Dad couldn't take care of it. --71.175.xxx.xx

Has anyone tried running an ozone machine? I know that's not the intended purpose but it seems to be an added bonus. I run a small machine I bought on Amazon ($50, GREAT investment) in between tenants and there's always a pile of dead bugs to vacuum up when it's done. Probably why the instructions say that the home must be vacant of people and pets when it's on... Just a thought. --174.103.xx.xxx

I'm so glad you posted your question. Just got one back with fleas so ive been following along. Saturday mornin set off flea bombs. Two in the backbedroom where we experience the fleas. Went back today, Monday to remove the carpet back there. Still fleas jumping on my legs. Spread Borax on the entire rug. Waited about 30 minutes and started pulling up carpet. Hardly any bugs! They dont like Borax! Was able to get rug out of mobilehome and outside. Set off another flea bomb, shut the bedroom door and out i went. Borax worked! --99.203.xx.xxx

Susan,

Small suggestion: check for a squirrel, possum or racoon nest in the basement, under porch, in attic.

We had a small issue and found out a possum was under our shed and the dog would walk past the shed.
