I've been using the credit and criminal check service through the site for some time now. Never had any criminal history show up for anyone. Been starting to wonder if that could really be right, with some of the folks screened for the rooming house. Recently, someone told me about his convictions. (Not violent or drugs, so I ran his app). Nothing showed up on the criminal check, and I KNOW there should have been. Now, I wonder what I have been missing!! Very disappointed that the service is not reliable - I have been relying on it, and wasting money.
Now I don't know where I can go to get RELIABLE national criminal information. Anyone have a good source?
Jeffrey: Will you please check this out, if you were not aware of the problem? Perhaps you can find out what's up?

Let me preface it with I have not used the service on this site...
I ran into the same thing recently. I switched services recently and they didn't find anything. I had a gut feeling it wasn't right, so I submitted the app to my old service and they found a few things. One of the things they found was something they would have been denied for. I was able to stop the process and move on thankfully. If I had already signed the lease, not sure what I would have been in store for.
The service I used that found the discrepancy was a local attorney that specializes in evictions. They also offer background checks. If you have an attorney in your town that does this, might be worth calling them. If they don't offer it, surely they could direct you to a reliable service to use. --72.209.xxx.xxx |

Unfortunately, Nicole. I am not aware of any in VA. And I want a national check. Hadn’t thought about using an attorney. Might be expensive, but worth checking out.

You can check the public Virginia online court case info, General District Court for traffic & or civil cases BUT you have to know the counties/cities that they have resided and that is very time consuming.
Also, the more serious cases are listed under the Circuit Court info, but again, it is city/county specific.
I, too, am interested in a source that is reliable after getting burned by an out of state tenant.
As some on here have mentioned, females have the advantage of using different names, married, single and boyfriends if they choose it seems. That complicates searching even more. --71.219.xx.xx |

Sorry to post again, but I just remembered something. Our first eviction in 2004 revealed that our tenant had given me a wrong social security number (by one digit, so could have feigned made an "honest" mistake), but was by no means an innocent mistake. She was about as crafty and evil a monster as I have ever run across and spent time in jail eventually for identity theft, prescription fraud, etc.

A national service can only search what the states provide. NC doesn't report evictions online, you have to go to the actual county courthouse which is bogus. NC's own criminal report system is often lacking in recent data.
MA doesn't report online. I think Utah has some issues too.
So I don't think you can blame the national services for not always finding everything.
For instance, I recently ran a person through Peoplefinder. This service pairs the name you provide with whatever it can find on that name, and other possible names, etc. The woman I was checking on ended up having had six last names and multiple variations of each. The name under which she was arrested here in this state only had one arrest which I knew about. But under her many other last names, numerous arrests and evictions. It took an actual person (me) to match them up and verify it was actually her based on previous address, relatives, etc.
When you put someone through a regular national criminal check, they can only check the name you provide. They can't guess about the other names. --50.82.xxx.xx |

The site I use verifies the name and SSN and then does a nation wide check. It's generally pretty reliable, but doesn't catch recent stuff. I recently had an applicant who I ran the background on and the site pulled stuff from 3-4 years ago, but didn't pick up a charge that occurred within the last week. I pulled that from the court's site. I routinely check PA Courts now before paying for the nationwide check. Sometimes that nationwide check isn't necessary if they've done dirt locally. --209.122.xx.xxx |

Hmmm... I've never had any criminal record show up, either.
The service I used before would catch all sorts of things, including traffic tickets and expunged records. But they raised their annual fee so high, I couldn't afford it for the small number of credit reports I run. --174.216.x.xx |

Most cities ( and towns) have online police logs. Googling an applicants name usually tells me more than a criminal report does . It has more details. Our state does have an online criminal record site, but you have to be registered with the state ( a LL is a legitimate entity to register)to use it. It is an easy process.
