I have eight relatively large trees that need to be taken down at a property. Two of them are massive and will crush the house if they were to fall. I got two different bids. One is to leave everything on the ground and I do the cleanup of the branches and take the firewood home for $1800. The second bid is $2500 and they run all the branches through a wood chipper and I take all the firewood home. So there is a $700 difference. I could rent a chipper and spend a day chipping the branches, the chipper would be $175. That would be a large tow behind the pick up truck with chipper. I could buy a smaller wood chipper from Lowe's for $750. Either wood chipper is going to add a day to the project. It would be at least one day to chip up all the branches and it's going to be two days to get that firewood out of there.

I could buy that wood chipper from Lowe's for $750 and add a day to the project chipping the branches and then I would have a wood chipper for the business should I need it in the future. Or I can just write the check and be done with it and take the firewood home when they are out of there. What would you do? --174.201.xx.xx

How often will you be using that wood chipper after you buy it?

I wouldn't want to spend a day doing that kind of work - especially for free. --98.245.xx.xx

I haven't needed a wood chipper yet in 13 years of doing this. If these were pine trees, I'd have them chipped without a doubt, but they're good hardwood.

Another option is a bonfire. --174.201.xx.xx

Ask around for someone who has a chipper and can do the chipping and hauling of your firewood for under 750 after the first company cuts it down.

If you can't find anyone, then hire the second company, and ask them how much to deliver the firewood to your place plus stack it.

I've rented a chipper before and done that work. Long hours, nasty, sticky, tiring. Well worth paying someone else to do it. --131.151.xx.xx

Not to mention dangerous to chip up the big stuff with a big chipper. Like Laura said, when I was younger and didn't have the money and did have the energy, I would do it myself. Now it is the opposite. I am happy to write the check. You will have enough work to do with the firewood. --108.44.xx.xxx

I don't like to buy equipment,it is just one more thing I need to maintain and keep under cover somewhere and it might not even start next time you need it.I would have my tree guy chip up the brush and get rid of it,my guy will save me money if I have a spot he can blow the chips on the property so he doesn't have to pay to get rid of them or spend the time driving them somewhere to dump. Also if I had that much wood I would have my guy load it on his truck and he brings it to my parents pasture where I process and season my firewood, lot easier than cutting it at a rental or a flip where I am under pressure to get it removed quickly,in my parents field I can do it when I get to it and enjoy it.Everyone thinks I am nuts but I love cutting and burning firewood,it is a hobby for me. --72.231.xxx.xxx

Why can’t he chip anything 3 inches or less in diameter and leave the rest for you? That’s the agreement I’d want. Leave all the big stuff - you cut that up and use for firewood. I would expect this agreement to be more than $1800 but less than $2500. Either way, those prices for 8 large trees sounds like a steal. Around here one large tree would be $800+. --24.147.xx.xxx

I have bought the chipper and played with it for awhile, pine or blond wood jams up everything cause the resin gets hot and sticks to the sides - I took it apart and sharpened the blades about 12 times (takes nearly a day), after owning this about 6 years I had to get another one - just started to leak a lot of oil and those blades were nearly shot but I got a lot of mulch out to the wheelbarrow so I wanted to stay with tradition, when this one gets tired I will pay someone, I loaned mine out but should have rented it out to defray the sharpen time. --76.188.xxx.xx

What kind of trees? I heat with wood and the BTU factor of firewood varies with the species and it certainly should be seasoned for a good year before burning. I would pay to have all of a cottonwood tree hauled away, but I would leap on a good hardwood. --216.23.xxx.xx

Once you start to collect stuff, it never ends. If I were you I'd pay someone else to cut, prune and remove all of the branches and leaves. All you have to do is cut a check. It can't get any easier than that!!!!! --47.156.xx.xx

I've never heard of anyone who had good use out of the home version wood chippers. They aren't powerful enough to do the job.

We cut up the firewood, the campfire wood, and then haul the branches to the dump ourselves, without chipping them.

Them hauling off the branches and leaving you the firewood sounds like a good option to me. --174.216.xx.xx

Does anyone barbecue in your area? You can get oak and cherry scraps hauled away for use in smokers.

Some of the big organizations will take some of it for their big group feeds or fundraiser. Elks club, or some group similar, took a bunch of oak from me for running a pit barbecue at the county fair. Not my good split firewood, but a whole lot of twisted branches that were too much work to cut into the size for the woodstove. --174.216.xx.xx
