So, people should be aware that Southwest is just following the law. And other airlines have been doing the same thing already. American Airlines' policy is very similar -- it disallows a bunch of "Service Animals" which as anything with hooves -- but then notes that trained miniature horses are an exception to that and ARE allowed.
It's funny that most of the news is hopping on the "horse as Service Animal" part of this -- because that is just the law and what every airline is doing. The ACTUAL news that relates more to us as landlords is that they also announced that they will limit Emotional Support Animals to ONLY dogs and cats and ONLY a maximum of one per person. And they must be in a carrier or on a leash the entire time (that was not required before). And they need a CURRENT letter from their doctor for the animal -- and have to present it on the day of travel. Again, those are all much stricter rules than before for ESAs.
I think it will be good for us in the long run. They follow a different law, but the more they put restrictions on ESAs, the more we can hopefully do it in the future.

Also, note that the ADA also includes dogs and horses as Service Animals.
The FHAA is a bit unclear but tends to follow the ADA definition for Service Animals (but not ESAs).
In other words, if we really got an applicant with a real disability and a trained Service Horse, we'd likely have to take it...

The airlines have always offered the travel option to the service horses however there have never been any yet that could be fastened securely for landing/takeoff or in distress weather, also they can not block fire escapes. This horse as service animal thing, someone sold congress a bill of goods. The law gives an impossibly low size for the miniature horse. Miniature horses are at least three times the weight given.
I'd have to check the law carefully to see if it is possible to reject a service horse that weighs three times the weight specified.
I've had horses all my life and I sure wouldn't trust my life to a guide horse for the blind. They don't have good spacial awareness and they have a very strong flight instinct.
You could probably train them to turn a light switch off and on. They could certainly pull a wheel chair, but a motorized wheel chair would be a lot less work. --174.216.x.xxx |
