I was over at rental home yesterday and noticed a strong musty smell coming from the basement. The tenants admitted they had wet rugs down there due to lots of heavy rain in recent weeks. They have a dehumidifier and fans running. I'm concerned about long term effects of this. Would it make sense to insist they dry their rugs elsewhere (back porch or driveway if it's sunny) and then wrap them up and store them? I could go over and mop basement floor with a bleach solution. I read that mildew must be killed with bleach or it will reappear each time the floor gets wet. I lived in this home for years and never had a musty problem like this, but I didn't have rugs down on the basement floor. --67.172.xxx.xxx |

Yes, Laura, insisting that they no longer throw wet items into the attic is certainly a good start. This is definitely something you want to prevent from being a bigger problem. --50.45.xxx.xxx |

The wet needs to be somewhere ventilated, ancient principle still needs to be followed. Folding up wet clothes does the same thing to a dresser. --76.188.xxx.xx |

Bleach fumes are toxic, so if you use it...wear a respirator and vacate the property after doing so with the windows open for several hours.
One thing I've used successfully is buying large boxes of baking soda, pouring them over as many surfaces as you can, let sit for 24-48 hours, then sweeping/vacuuming.
