I always browse the properties for sale on Craigslist and came accross this strange listing:

“I have a unique opportunity for someone to live in the in-law apartment in my house, for free, for 36 months.

The 'catch,' however, is that you need to 'buy' my house. I will cover all down payment, closing costs, etc -- so you will not have to invest anything out-of-pocket.

I will then rent the house back from you, with the intent and legal option to 'buy' it back within 36 months.

So, if you're a young professional or professional couple that can qualify for a mortgage of $550k -- and you'd like your housing cost to be $0 for the next 36 months, please feel free to respond and I can share more details.

Again, this deal would not require you to invest any of your own money -- but you would need to qualify for a $550k mortgage, either on your own or by perhaps co-owning with a parent.

The house is valued at $690k. I designed and built it in 2004-2005, and it's been our family home since.”

What do you think is his angle in doing this? Maybe he is in legal trouble and needs assets out of his name? He would still have cash from the sale though, so that wouldn’t totally make sense.

Looks like he needs to temporarily hide some assets. Divorce, lawsuit, something like that probably.

Someone should buy it, then not sell it back and evict him. Screw him at his own game. --108.69.xxx.xxx

if you don't sell it back they'll be some angle to make you do it. S&W 38 comes to mind.

Why would you want to qualify for a loan-- use your credit rating not to own it? Nothing out of YOUR pocket? Try running that by the mortgage lender-- there is no such thing on a mortgage from a lender where it's nothing down. Not this kind of money.

I think he wants to get rid of it for some reason and has no intention of buying it back or even staying there. If he was in FL I would say there was a sinkhole under it. In MA, I would think this is just another criminal Mafia or other. Is this house right on Revere Beach Blvd by any chance? If it is then this guy has no intention of buying it back.

Intent and option to buy it back don't seem to be anything that could FORCE him to buy it back. Run. Do let me know if it's on Revere Beach Blvd. --73.178.xxx.xx

He is trying to hide assets probably in a divorce. Since what he is asking for is basically illegal I'd flag the ad. --24.45.xxx.xxx
