I have a big chunk of hardwood splintering and lifting up in the middle of my dining room at my house. Any ideas how to fix/stop this? --50.32.xxx.xxx

Casien glue and heavy weights to hold it down for a couple days, this is likely caused from underneath, moisture or cracked joist which should be sistered with 5/16 bolts, washers and nuts. --76.188.xxx.xx

Better go down the basement and see if it needs some jacks. Seems like weight on the ends would cause the middle to break. Check around the foundation too and see if there is suddenly extra weight on a joist or a bad joist. Is this one of those old stone homes with the two foot thick walls? --73.178.xxx.xx

Check the humidity levels in your dining room as well as the area directly below it. It sounds like the flooring might be expanding due to the high humidity we've been having. If the floor was installed too tight without any expansion space the increased moisture content of the wood will cause it to expand & possible make a hump or even a crack in the flooring. --71.174.xx.xx

NE,think you'd better change your supplier.Even C grade shouldn't do that,or even D,you could buy here in New Haven,but I don't think they'd ship it that far!................charlie............................................. --32.214.xxx.xx

Explain more. Is it hardwood flooring? Or is it some structural wood from underneath? Can you post a photo? --99.92.xxx.xxx

Splintering hardwoods (by NE [PA]) Posted on: Aug 12, 2018 8:33 AM
Message:

It's not structural. 2 year old hardwood. No moisture underneath. Groove side of board, following grain. --50.32.xxx.xxx

I would not like that. Interesting. Did you go down stairs and check it out? Do your kids plan under there? Time to buy an area rug? --99.203.xx.xxx

Could it be from an errant nail during install? The nails sometimes will hit a knot and "curve" up through the wood. --99.92.xxx.xxx
