tear gas eviction (by Pacman [IL]) Posted on: Aug 7, 2018 4:40 AM

Hi fellow LL,

I've had a raccoon problem in my house attic for sometimes. When the mother raccoon first came in Spring, I paid a wildlife expert to set a trap. She was so smart and never took the bait in the trap. 4 weeks past and she still there. Therefore I thought that I would wait until her babies grow up and leave. It's been over a few months but the entire family is still there. I could hear the walking/scratching noise at night.

I'm thinking about gassing them out. I used to use bug bombs (the kind that kills dog flea) at my rentals and it worked wonderful for big open attic (6 foot from floor to roof). My house attic is more confine (2-3 foot from floor to roof). Bug bomb is poisonous. If they don't escape fast enough and die in the attic, it would be very difficult to get the smelly dead body out of the confine space. Therefore I'm considering using tear gas. It will definitely not kill them. I just want them out. What do you guys think?

Thanks for sharing your inputs :-)

when police shoot tear gas into a house, the entire heating system must be replaced because it travels through the duct work.

I have no idea - can "regular" people buy tear gas? --72.70.xxx.x

myob[GA], thanks for the moth ball idea. I had that idea before but thought that the smart raccoons could move all balls to corner far away from them.

plenty[MO], thank you for warning about how toxic moth balls are. You're right. It's very toxic.

Nicole[PA], thanks for great input. It makes sense that duct work have to be replaced after tear gas was shot into the house. However I plan to use it in the attic though... Yes I've found a tear gas canister for sales on Amazon for about $20.

WMH[NC], I thought of pepper spray as well. However my two foot high attic makes it impossible for me to go near and spray them directly. Or are you talking about just spraying the entire attic and hope that them smell would spread to them? --73.168.x.xxx

Place a live trap close to the skuttle port, chain it there with leftover dog chain from moveout using the clips to the cage, it will not be fun but dump the trap into a trash can and carry outside to re-home the raccoon - repeat, they are very destructive to PVC pipes, wires, even wood as you already know from observing entry place. Very well formed aluminum panels to cover after you get out the fecal matter - negligent landlords this is a costly mistake. --76.188.xxx.xx

If the entry post is open, you could try the pepper spray wearing a face mask and double layer damp towels on your neckline - any exposed skin will get burnt from the spray and a wind shift can make it blow back to you as the air flow now goes out the skuttle. --76.188.xxx.xx

They got imn so they can get out. What has worked well for me was 1) 2 or 3 very brite lights on timers set for 7/8 AM and 2) a large LOUD radio set to racous music. They like their privacy.

Chec very often and before implementing, find the access and be ready to close it up after they vacate. --174.225.xxx.xx

OK, you have to lure them out with some kind of delicious food outside as soon as the young ones are able to get out of there and down to the ground. You need more than one trap and they like peanuts a lot and also dog food as they like a little meat. Once they are all in those cage traps you can get someone to seal up the hole and I would put some kind of steel plate up there so line up the contractor first. Maybe the person who brings the cage traps will know who can do that. They are very cute but very primitive. I found a dead young one in my yard that had been castrated by another one presumably and the infection had killed it. From what I have observed I think male critters kill the young males of everything even squirrels and groundhogs. All I see are females and one very large male. --73.178.xxx.xx

Had a family of raccoons with babies living in the chimney of our house growing up. My sister and I played electronic battleship next to the fireplace and they left as soon as we started playing. You could hear them going down the gutters on the outside of the house. A few nights of that and they moved on to somewhere else. --166.137.xxx.xx

Here is what works for me.

Cage trap. Cover the floor of trap with layers of news paper or cardboard making sure to not interfere with the trigger or locking mechanism. You can also cover the outside of the trap to hide the wire. Trash Panda's are smart and will notice the wire under their feet and shy away from going in the trap.

Be sure to wire or stake the trap down so it can't tip over which will release the door allowing the coon to escape.

Consider putting a couple traps side by side so if you catch one, the others MIGHT try and investigate by going into the other traps.

Use a strong smelling bait like fishy cat food, or even a Fast food bag with a few fries and bit of burger still in it. They also love fruit. A pack of cherry kool-aid mixed into a $1.50 bag of wally world cat food works great.

Be careful relocating the trap, Trash Panda's are fierce and will try to scratch/bite you through the cage.

Repair the entry hole on the exterior of the home 100%. Don't skimp and do a shoddy patch job or they will tear their way back in.

Good luck and update us with your progress ! --137.119.xxx.xxx

Dont do the anti freeze. Horrible way to die.

If you don't mind lethal methods, buy some dog proof coon traps. It works like a hand cuff. Then you bop them on the head and carry out of the attic. Of course they will be chewing up your attic while handcuffed to the trap....

Ok on second thought forget the DP trap. They work good outside where they cant damage much. --137.119.xxx.xxx

I had a Raccoon problem at a house and apartment building. They are supper smart. At the home, I placed a friends dog round the back yard so the Raccoon couldn't leave for days and was starving under the house. Then when I removed the dog, the Raccoon ran away in fear for it's life and never came back.

At the apartment property a Raccoon got into the tall attic. So I placed a dog through the access door on a lease. With a powerful flash light the dog could see the Raccoon and started to bark non-stop. The Raccoon left through the hole it made to gain access. They I boarded up the hole and was done with it. --47.156.xx.xx
