Last summer spent a few hours prepping the deck and sanding to make sure I had a nice surface prepared for the new solid colored, Behr stain from HD. This summer it has peeled on almost every board and looks like crap. Now I'm just pissed.

What have you had good luck with? Any other preparation tricks? --50.45.xxx.xx

Is it pressure treated? I'm not sure stain sticks to that. I use Cabot's oil base. --73.178.xxx.xx

you have to wait for pressure treated wood to cure then ok to stain. I think you stained too soon. --166.137.xxx.xx

Do you have a hard to find roof leak? Water and wood is not a good combination, ask a boat builder how to maintain exterior siding, flat wood is much harder to keep in good condition. --76.188.xxx.xx

Had the same thing with Behr's stain. The conclusion we arrived at is, shockingly: the stuff is total crap. We use Olympic now. Seems to hold up for at least 3 years. --96.28.xxx.xxx

The new decks I've had done in the last few years...I'm leaving bear. I stain the vertical boards and top rails. Can you run a sander across it and let it age and be natural? --99.203.xx.xx

I worked for Behr paint, as a paint muxer for 2 or 3 days as a kid. (Before it was bought by HD.) Remember Lucy Ricardo and the assembly line skit? Well just add me, and paint, and it was pretty close. What a mess! :)

I've used it for many years but it doesn't seem to hold up well anymore.

JB,most of the Behr stains need to be thinned .If they're water based,A little water, makes them easier to Apply. If oil based then little paint thinner. If they seem too thick, then they are. It's good to check the instructions,I know you wanted to get it done,

3 years ago, I used the Sherwin Williams brand solid deck stain on my well seasoned deck and it started to peel off in the first year! I have used other brands of stain and none of them lasted more than 2 years.

I am now convinced that all advertising claims from all deck stain manufacturers are just plain B.S. If I had it to do all over, I would have never put any stain on my deck and just it weather naturally to light gray.

Last week, I had a new deck built at a rental house and my plan now is to put nothing on. You live and learn.

Solid stain does not hold up well. But I have gotten 3 or 4 years out of it. The wood has to be absolutely dry, like 2 weeks of dry weather after washing. You can't paint in the sun and heat, it dries to quickly and won't adhere. I also find working it in with a brush and the edges in between the boards is important. Also don't put too thick of a coat on. Oil base tends to hold up better than latex, but it is getting hard to find in the environmentally regulated states. --108.44.xx.xxx

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions.

Just a couple of points I should probably include:

This Behr Solid stain is "supposed to" last 7 years-

It is a water-based stain

I made sure deck was very dry before ever applying-

I followed all manufacture's recommendations for application-

In this area we get way too much rain to leave decks untreated-

I'm thinking about doing everything I did last time and trying it again with an oil-base stain.

Definitely agree with some others here that have seen similar results and feel this stain is garbage and their "waranty" is a joke.

Appreciate the feedback!

Since you can no longer get a true oil base stain I tried a few others.

So far the Flood brand followed by Olmypic solid color seem to hold up good for about 5 years.

Both are made by PPG but are different.

Cabots used to be good until they sold out to Valspar.

And the epa no longer allows them to use as much solvent.

I even tested some expensive armstrong clark stain that I had to pay shipping on.

With the new oil based ones be prepared for them to not ever dry well.

Can even rub some color off on the bottom of a shoe to carry into a house. Even a year later.

You can goggle and see some of the problems. Cabots oil now is one of the worst. --73.152.xx.xxx

I have totally moved away from using anything from HD in terms of paint. Total garbage - wears off, looks like crap. I used Cabot a few years on my deck and that seemed to hold up pretty well. Now that I know Cabot was bought out by Valspar, I will either be going with Sherman Williams or Benjamin Moore's brand. --32.211.xxx.xxx

The flood brand made by PPG pittsburg paints will hold up better than SW or Ben Moore.

Maybe not Ben Moore if you follow instructions. The stain itself will last longer if you do what they say. Yearly add their clear coat to protect the stain. --73.152.xx.xxx

I am so late seeing this while searching for something else. We've had the same frustration after using the terrible Sherwin Williams Deckscapes, which they finally discontinued. (We love SW for paint.)

We finally found "DEFY Extreme Wood Stain" which was not available locally. It's the best we've used and we'll continue ordering it online. There are some youtube videos showing tests of the product compared to others. defywoodstain.com

For solid color stains, which Defy doesn't make, the best we've found so far is Olympic, but we are always looking to find better. (Olympic was at least way better than the old SW Deckscapes.) --71.246.xxx.xx
