Reading a thread below got me to thinking about the push button door locks. What is to stop the tenant from changing the code and the landlord has no access? Yes, I understand I can force them to give me the code, break in, etc., but if I want/need to go inside now, I want inside.

what if upon leaving tenant changes the code and doesn't give it to you? do you need to break the lockset? --72.70.xxx.x

It's depends on which model lock you're talking about.

I use the Schlage BE series. It uses a six digit programming code (which you don't issue to your tenants) and up to 19 user codes (issue them 1 code, retaining any other codes for yourself and/or contractors if needed). There is also a key bypass in case the electronics fail.

Your tenant cannot change the codes without the programming code, but they can set it to factory default settings. Each lock has a random factory default set during manufacture and there is no way for the tenant to get the default information - if they run a reset procedure, they will have no access to any codes and will be calling you to tell you the lock stopped operating. You can then pull your records, reset the lock with known codes and tell them not to reset the lock again. Charge accordingly for abuse of the system. --98.229.xxx.xx

I do exactly as Beelocks does. The key backup is keyed to my master key.

I use them on my home too! --64.222.xxx.xx

I also have electronic deadbolts on the entrance doors to the rooming house. I LOVE them. All I need to do when someone moves out is delete their code, not change the lock. Adding or deleting any code requires a Master code that only I know. And there is a key also. --68.10.xxx.x

I use the Schlage code deadbolt lock. The only problem is that it doesn't work well in outside in cold weather. Inside, it's fine and as other have said, just use the master code to remove tenant code. I have keys for backup. I also use them to give contractor access. I combine these with the Landlord locks system and between the two of them, my headaches with keys are gone. --209.122.xx.xxx

I have a Kwikset push button lock on my personal home. There is a master programming code plus it was easily re-keyed to my Landlord Locks system so my master key fits it. --199.64.x.xxx
