Linda J I don't understand the fascination with enormous new construction. Even if you have a large family and need 5-6 bedrooms and an equal number of bathrooms, why not buy an old house that's in good shape and remodel to your needs? I shudder to think of a newly built home costing hundreds of thousands that is probably put together with the cheapest materials and day laborers. One thing you can say for old houses is they were built to last. Friends of mine put 40k into their 1996 built home a few years ago for repairs. A few cosmetic upgrades but it was mostly structural issues and rot. My home was built in 1923 out of solid oak. We have done a lot of cosmetic stuff, and recently removed the carpet to reveal gorgeous red oak floors. A little money to refinish and they are beautiful.
