Just sold the flip house owned by a smoker.
Had to Killz the whole thing to keep the stains/smell from bleeding through. We rolled it and it worked fine but I am wondering if spraying would have been better/faster ?
I have a Grayco airless sprayer that we have had good results using for doors and trim work.

The first thing is to clean the walls with the nicotine stuck in the grease so that you don't have to use something like Kilz. It may bleed through anyway. Because I didn't clean a ceiling some years ago, I ended up putting six coats of sstuff on it including Kilz. --73.178.xxx.xx |

it's harder to clean the oil paint out of the sprayer, but if you were doing the whole house then the sprayer was probably the way to go. The set up is more but if your are not worried about the floors or drifting spray it's saves a ton of time. Windows scrape clean easily. Bathroom might not be worth spraying and next would be the kitchen if you are worried about the cabinets. Don't dust the balusters on the stairs and the spatter should wipe up easily if you have at least covered the railing w a drop cloth. --24.194.xx.xx |

I have three professional painting contractors. They all use different methods.
One uses brushes and rollers.
The second one sprays.
The third one uses all methods, which ever is quicker.
To paint a 1 bedroom 750 square foot apartment here are the times for completion.
Team #1, 2-1/2 days. Cost $900 Best Result "B+"
Team #2, 1 full day Cost $700 Worst Finish "C-"
Tear #3, half a day Cost $800 Nice job "B-"

Best to clean off nicotine off walls where there is less nicotine to cover. Once the walls are washed then the sealer will work much better. --207.164.xxx.xxx |

Hammer,
My unscientific but experienced theory: when covering stains and nicotine 2 LIGHT spray coats has more sealing power than one thicker rolled coat.
When we spray we use much less paint (30-50% less) than rolling and get good coverage.
For a finish coat sprayed leaves a dull appearance so we backroll for a nicer look.
My tip: cheap liquid car wax and a square paint pad to wax the glass. Then use a rattle can to spray the mullions and trim of the window. Remove the overspray by scraping the wax off with a razor blade- easy!
(Learned that at a seminar!)

************************************************************* Wow that sounds good,..thank you!
We use a Wagner BATTERY operated paint stick,..IMO much better than any other ones,..the extra small expense is well worth it.
We hire a handy man sometimes 2 or 3,...they start out edging with the square paint pads,..after a little while when they get a bit ahead,..one starts with the roller while the other?s move one with the edging,..when they are far ahead,..another guy moves over to a roller etc,..
They can paint an apt in record time,.. --66.30.xx.xxx |
