Rural area with lots of 3-5ac properties.
Anybody have a clue how to handle abandoned livestock when purchasing a foreclosure?
Sheep/goat/cattle will be sold long before an auction (or eaten) but there is little to no demand for horses. Drove by a place the other day with a horse in the lot behind the house.

Is the horse being fed, or just on permanent pasture?
How is the horse being watered?
You could always call the local sheriff, or the police department, if you're inside the city limits. They usually deal with livestock issues, and either can either do something, or point you to people who can do something. But it will also start a paper trail so that you don't get hit with an animal cruelty charge in a bad-case scenario. --96.46.xxx.xx |

Here in Houston, you can take horses and other livestock to the SPCA. You may also find a private rescue in your area. Poor thing. --23.30.xx.xxx |

During an eviction sherriff is supposed to call animal control for any abandoned animals. You can also contact SPCA and see if you can reach out to horse rescues. --99.182.xx.xxx |

Property is in Pre-foreclosure and owners are still there.
I could see a situation where the owners would leave and the auction winner would get stuck with a horse.
Does anybody have an abandoned animal clause in their lease for critters left behind ? --137.119.xxx.xxx |

Pre-foreclosure on house doesn't mean they will leave horse behind. --50.82.xxx.xx |

Just because they are in pre foreclosure doesn't mean they will even loose the house never mind the horse.I wouldn't worry about it till it happened, then an ad on craigslist or facebook would probably find it a new owner overnight. --72.231.xxx.xxx |

Hammer,if they leave the horse and you buy the property, just leave him in the pasture,he'll find enough to eat, maybe a few bales of hay in the winter, they don't really eat that much either

Call the cat food factory??
Out here there are "rescue" places for wild horses and burros. Must be something for unwanted farm animals.
Maybe a CL ad or local farmers group. --47.216.xx.xxx |

Funny story, we moved to the wife's family farm. It was the classic City mouse (me) country mouse (her) story.
A few months after moving in, a bull mysteriously appeared in our field/pasture.
Non of the neighbors had a clue who it belonged to. The ROMEO crowd of old farmers (Retired Old Men Eating Out) would stop talking when I walked into the local breakfast joint and smile like they found a $50 bill.
After a couple weeks of this (along with asking if I ever found the owner of the bull) I finally came in and said really loudly "You can eat bulls right? I mean they are cows and cows are steak ..... right???" You should have seen the look on their faces. That afternoon my wife's "Uncle Edward" suddenly discovered that his bull got out and came to look at it for the 3rd time......"weaaall yup, that looks like Fernando" 5 minutes later a cattle trailer arrived with another ROMEO in it and they loaded it up.
I was the talk of the breakfast crowd for a couple more days. "That city boy wanted to eat your bull Edward !! " --137.119.xxx.xxx |

I never heard this term before but every little diner near me has two of these - early morning breakfast and 10:30 "lunch". --72.70.xxx.x |

Hammer,
Fun-knee!
Bought a farm house that included a dead hog behind the barn. Peee-yooo!
They also kept a goat in the bedroom during the winter. The room was filled with straw and odor.
My lease is clear: fees for abandoned animals and fish tanks.

A different neighbor tried it again a year later with a horse. Nobody knew anything until I started asking the ROMEO's where I could get a horse turned into dog food for our 125 lb Pyrenees. Came home that afternoon to truck/trailer tracks in the field and the horse was gone. ;-)
Sometimes the dumb guy is smart.....sometimes. :-D --137.119.xxx.xxx |
