What do you do for shorter than 80" exterior doors? Is there somewhere to order these without spending an arm and a leg? Or should I just be buying a solid wood slab and cutting it down?

Can you gain space from the header? --166.137.xxx.xx

Is this for a mobile home? or older stick built home?

If its brick or mobile, then get a 2nd hand wood door and trim the bottom and top to size. Trim both to keep it from looking weird if you need to take more than an inch or two off.

If its an older stick built home, you may be able to open up the wall and move the header up as DeannaTX suggested and use regular doors. Of course you will have to repair the finishes inside and out. BUT it may be cheaper in the long run, here is why.

Replacing exterior doors is a pain. You can buy a slab, router the hinges, drill the knobs, sand and paint, then install. OR you can buy a pre-hung exterior door for about 2x the money and pop it in the opening in under an hour. Time is money. Same goes for interior doors.

Interior Door slab $35 then put all that labor into it.

Prehung interior door $75-$120. Paint and install knob. --137.119.xxx.xxx

It is so much easier to just buy a solid core door and cut it down. Check to make sure the top of the frame is level, so you can maybe just cut some off the top instead. --47.156.xx.xx

Kyle,

Is the TOP of the opening too low or the BOTTOM of the opening too high?

(old farmer joke!)

I suggest an old door like from a reclaim shop because they are made from real wood that can be cut. Be sure to seal wherever you cut to keep out moisture that may warp it later.

Mobile Home supply stores sell shorter doors: typically 80, 78. and 76.

But I like to cut out the header and move up if at all possible so the door is standard. --98.122.x.xx

Thanks everyone. It is an old stick built house. I think the top of the door is too close to the roof line to get to standard height. I will check the mobile home supply to see if I can get a shorter door there, otherwise I will get a solid wood door and cut it down. --73.102.xxx.xx
