This is your basic coil top stove/range. Received this from tenant:

"Hello. I seem to be having an issue with the stove. I am sometimes getting a shock if I am cooking and touch my pan, or food in it. At first I thought I was crazy, but it continues. Not always, but many times."

I did some checking and she's likely not crazy. She says it happens when using various burners. At first I assumed an appliance issue but since it's happening with any burner now I'm thinking maybe electrical.

Any thoughts or similar experience? I was going to just replace the stove but it's not going to fix anything if it's electrical. So I'd like to make the first best guess at what to check. --173.170.xxx.xxx

This is an emergency. Get a good electrician immediately. Until he gets there shut off the power to the range and to any other appliance that can be touched simultaneously with the range. I am an electrician and this happened at my house. The refrigerator was the problem-- but shocking also occurred at the range. --66.226.xx.xxx

Lisa,I'm a master carpenter and not qualified as an electrician but like someone else suggested, get an electrician over there now, someone forgot to hook up the ground at the circuit breaker box,or maybe because of using Pex instead of copper water pipe broke the ground connection, here or there. Nothing to fool around with........charlie................................m.............. --174.199.x.xxx

Ok. Thanks for the feedback.

It's just been odd because no changes to appliances or electrical have been made since 2013. It just started recently without explanation. --173.170.xxx.xxx

I agree it sounds like a ground issue. If you want to check a couple basic things, take the plastic cover off the plug (of course after turning breaker off), and make sure all four wires are properly hooked up inside the outlet and not corroded. If you don't see anything obvious, call electrician. --99.92.xxx.xxx

A friend had a new kitchen installed and appliance. The some issue, tenants getting shocked from cook top. The contractor sent over his in-house electrician and said the installation was perfect, not their problem.

I told my friend that a 220 volt cook top has 4 wires. Two "Hot" wires, a "Neutral" wire and a "Ground". Someone got a wire mixed up and when you turn on a burner it doesn't reach full temperature. He said that it took twice as long to boil water, that I was right. So they hired a real licensed electrician who was told to check out a "Hot" wire being swapped with the "neutral" or "ground".

That what it was, took 10 minutes to correct. --47.156.xx.xx

My guess is a burnt wire causing a short. Dont use it of course until fixed. Should be a cheap easy fix once they find the problem. --73.152.xx.xxx

I suspect a broken wire touching the stove body or a poor ground.

The wires and sockets that connect to the coil elements are often flimsy and loose.

The tenant might be using tinfoil covers under the stove elements. One of these covers might be causing a short with the wires to the stove coil.

Or maybe tenant has just decided she wants a new stove.

Either way it needs to be investigated now. --70.29.xxx.xxx

A bent heating element could do this with the cookware, faulty wiring the ground would make sense for the body of the appliance, once the ground is connected the breaker should trip unless undersize wire was used and it has burnt off some connecting post. Stove cable is AWG6 and can go on a 50 or a 40 amp breaker. --76.188.xxx.xx

Many years ago my family ran a large property management co in a ski resort. One time we had like 6 units burned up because of some kind of short in a stove in a non occupied unit. It was over 40+ years ago so can't recall the specifics. --47.216.xx.xxx

Just finished with electrician. It had something to do with the fact the stove used a three pronged plug. He added something he called a jumper to the stove to properly ground it and the problem seemed solved.

He couldn't t explain why it only started recently but said they've had similar calls.

You don't get this issue with the upgraded four wire plugs. I put them in when doing remodels but it's not a cheap fix. The three pronged ones have always worked just fine except when they don't. So it had to do with how the plug wire was connected to the appliance. --173.170.xxx.xxx

Thanks cjo'h. I have been doing this successfully for 30 years. I know far more than the average homeowner as far as repairs and maintenance go.

I'm sure I could save a bit if I learned more about the plumbing, electrical and air conditioning trades. But I don't really want to take the time or buy the tools. Not when I have quality tradesmen I can rely on. Things that would take them minutes to do would take me longer. Fortunately I'm in a good place in life and would rather pay someone else to assume the liability and repair things right the first time.

Kind of the same reason I pay someone else to mow my lawn. Something I'm fully capable of doing. I just value my time more and more the older I get.

And now I know something else to check when using a three pronged stove plug. The electrician taught me what I need to know for the future. Safety and liability protection is just more important to me at this point than saving a few dollars. --173.170.xxx.xxx
