Figure out where your roaches are concentrated, like from a particular cupboard, or in a window frame, or wherever, and focus your Advion there, but run a bead in every room. Then see which ones get eaten, and which ones get ignored. As the beads in an infested room get consumed, reapply, but leave the dead ones lying around. Don't clean them up for a week or two. I probably went through 8 or 12 tubes of Advion gel in one bad case for a 1000-sf 2/1.5; a bigger house or a worse infestation may require more, but keep the Advion going until you go from a roach party to only seeing maybe one or two in a visit.

I use:

#1: Advion roach gel

#2: A combination of Optimate and Pivot, applied with a pump sprayer

#3: Gentrol Point Source

The Advion does most of the work. The Optimate and Pivot are best for the middle-end. The Gentrol is the end game, when you've gone to seeing maybe only one or two in a week. It keeps the survivors from reproducing. --96.46.xxx.xx

Deanna I am using a pest company right now for this in a multi unit. What do you do to protect moving them between units or into your car to take home? Right now I am changing flip flops and cleaning them after and ziplock bagging them. I need to get into one to clean but worry about what to do with the vacuum after. --96.81.xxx.xxx

I was told by a pest pro not to spray when using the gel. Spray first when you see them everywhere. If you can't stop them when hitting them directly, switch to another product. I do dust all crevices and even the counters and floors w/ borid/ boric acid and remove all outlet covers etc. In the kitchen scrub up under the counter to get all the eggs, leave the cabinets open and take the drawers out. Also take the cardboard off the back of the fridge and vac that out and then dust. Also use the bait stations. Leave everything you can pulled away from the walls. The eggs are round and clearish. Also caulk as many gap as you can along the baseboard/ trim, etc. I don't think you will track them between units on your shoes. Roaches will crawl in your supplies. If you vac has a bag, throw the bag away. Worst case was a tenant where roaches were so thick they were living in the children's bedding and had to use a shop vac.It took about a month of being empty to end the infestation. --24.194.xx.xx

@StillLearning, that's one of the things that's kept me out of multis. I'd love the thought of efficiency! But I'm nervous about concentrating my risk-- fire, flood, hail, tornado, pests, whatever-- all under one roof.

I'm not too concerned about carrying home roaches on my clothes. Roaches are obvious. I go in, do my treatment, lock it up, and forget about it for a week. Then I come back, assess, and do my next treatment.

I'm much more vigilant about carrying fleas or bedbugs, though. In that case, I go out of my way to wear shorts, so I can see my legs. I check myself before I get in the truck, and I check myself again when I'm on my back porch, and then my clothes go straight into the washing machine anyways, and do not pass Go, and my shoes stay outside in the sun for a few hours, or into the wash with my clothes if they're my canvas tennis shoes.

When I had my bedbug experience, I asked my heat treatment guy about how he was able to keep the bugs from moving from Unit A into a cooler Unit B. He said they couldn't, which was why you always treated three adjacent units. You start at one end; you treat the first three units; then you treat the second, third, and fourth unit; then you treat the third, fourth, and fifth unit; and so on down the line, presuming a townhouse orientation.

So I would expect a chemical treatment to be somewhat similar. You treat where the main problem is, but you also treat the units that have common walls.

In a multi, at least in Texas, Tenant A is responsible for Tenant A's pests, and Tenant B is responsible for Tenant B's pests, but you're responsible for protecting Tenant B from Tenant A's pests, so in reality, to protect your investment, you treat everyone's pests all the time.

So I would expect a multi to already have a monthly pest control visit scheduled, even if it's just you making the rounds with a pump sprayer full of Optimate and Pivot. That would give you access to the premises, so you can see who goes a month without taking out the trash, or who leaves food on the counter, or who's bought a set of used furniture from someone with five dogs and fleas.

For me, I have a dedicated vacuum for cleaning up at turnovers. My MIL found it at a garage sale. It gets stored in a building that regularly reaches 100-120* five months out of the year, and there's no food/water source. If I'm cleaning up a known pest problem, though, like Small Potatoes, those vacuum bags go straight into the dumpster and stay away from my house trash. --96.46.xxx.xx

As small potatoes mentioned this is operator error, flood the trim strips first with growth hormone, from the ceiling fans down, then allow it to -off gas- and you should go outside for 15 minutes while that happens, then you can do the drops of avion on top of every corner of trim strips - also put a dot on top of doors near the hinge side, wait 3 days to see the dead ones starting to stack up, retreat the dots of gel bait in a week but no flooding for at least 10 days, wait again for the gas to come out - it pretty much cancels the yummy part of the gel bait. --76.188.xxx.xx

Ted,

Advion is a BAIT. YOu want them to com eeat the bait and carry it back to the "nest".

Suspend SC is a killer/repellant. It will kill but also push them away...from the bait.

Delta dust is good because it stays put, and will last forever. When they walk across it they will die. It MUST be laid as a fine dust. If it's thick the can walk on it without effect.

Check for tiny water leaks under the sink, water heater, etc. They need water to survive and a little bit can keep them going a long time.

In the summer they will simply go outside until the spray loses it's punch, then walk back in.

Spray a "perimeter spray" 3 feet out and 3 feet high around your foundation as a barrier.

BRAD

Integrated pest control is about eliminating the elements for survival not just dropping chemicals. Three elements necessary for survival are food, water and warm to live and breed. First chalking all the cracks in the baseboard, kitchen cupboards along with insulation foam where pipes, wires enter floors or walls. Next eliminate water supply by putting bleach in the defrost pan of the refrigerator along fixing leaky faucets, insulating pipes then draining all the sinks. Nothing survives more then seven days without water. Thoroughly cleaning behind fridge, stove then taking out anything that is a source for food. Had great results with Max Force or Combat gel once the elements are eliminated where the process becomes one hundred per cent effective. Roaches travel close to walls so sticky traps catch some of the roaches. A severe roach infestation a shop vac will eliminate the roaches visible. Remember the elements necessary for survival. Here putting anything outside on a cold day or night the roaches will run for it. --147.194.xxx.xx
