Poor poachers...
From the BBC: Lions eat 'rhino poachers' on South African game reserve.
At least two suspected rhino poachers have been mauled to death and eaten by lions on a South African game reserve, officials say.
Rangers discovered the remains of two, possibly three, people in a lion enclosure in the Sibuya reserve, near the south-east town of Kenton-on-Sea.
A high-powered rifle and an axe were also found.
There has been an rise in poaching in Africa in recent years, to feed growing demand for rhino horn in parts of Asia.
In China, Vietnam and elsewhere, rhino horn is erroneously believed to have aphrodisiac qualities.
Sibuya reserve owner Nick Fox said in a statement on the reserve's Facebook page that the suspected poachers entered the reserve late on Sunday night or early on Monday morning.
"They strayed into a pride of lions - it's a big pride so they didn't have too much time," Mr Fox told AFP news agency.
"We're not sure how many there were - there's not much left of them."
The remains were first spotted at 16:30 local time on Tuesday (14:30 GMT).
An anti-poaching team arrived on the scene, where a hunting rifle with silencer, a long axe and wire-cutters - equipment generally used by rhino poachers - were also found.
Several lions had to be tranquilised before the remains could be recovered, Mr Fox added.
Four proposals to save the rhino
Would a legal market deter poachers?
Police have been patrolling the area in case any of the suspected poachers survived.
Nine rhinos were killed by poachers in Eastern Cape province, where the reserve is located, this year alone.
More than 7,000 have been killed in South Africa in the past decade. --50.45.xxx.xx |

The current no hunting policy is stupid.
A rhino horn is worth about $150-300 to a poacher in Africa. Thats a years wages or more and all they have to do is "go hunting" and not get caught.
If they allowed very limited sport hunting, that same rhino would be worth $10,000 to $30,000 for the tag alone. Their entire village could get a years wages and not have to do anything except NOT poach and help protect the rhinos. Then you add in the tourism dollars for the hunting safari and there would be some jobs available for those that want to work plus tourism money for wild life watching.
By placing big game "off limits" the value of wildlife to the locals is minimized to a few bucks on the black market or a few lbs of meat in the cook pot. --137.119.xxx.xxx |

Hammer, logic is not genetic in some countries. There are some satellites that watch various areas in African protected lands and if they detect the movement of the large herds wildebeest or other similar animals, running, it triggers a warning that poachers are in the area. Someone needs to duplicate whatever the Asians think there is in rhino horn and put it in a pill and market it. Probably just the power of suggestion that makes everything work better after consuming rhino horn. --73.178.xxx.xx |

Hammer is right. I watched a documentary about rhinos. The horn re-grows so a guy was raising rhinos for their horn, without killing them. He has a barn filled with horn but cannot sell them to feed the rhinos.
A renewable resource but they kill the goose that lays the golden eggs.

Most of the poaching is done by locals. UNLESS you can create value for them, a (rhino, elephant, kudu, etc...) is meat and possibly a nuisance that is getting into their garden.
So the highest and best use of a large beast to a local is to shoot it and put it into the stew pot. Feed your family and keep it out of the garden. Now if you allow sport hunting, that same nuisance critter may now be worth a years pay to your family and all you have to do is NOT poach it and call the game warden if you see anything questionable.
Locals will attempt to kill animals with whatever is available. Home made muzzleloader cannons made out of drain pipe shooting wheel weights are not unheard of. This often results in an angry wounded animal who will promptly mulch anybody they come in contact with. --137.119.xxx.xxx |

Hammer,I agree with you,and typically when a trophy hunter comes in and legally shoots one of these animals the locals get the meat and they are happy with the hunters. It is only our American liberals who get upset about it --72.231.xxx.xxx |
