If you allow animals, are there any dog breeds you don’t allow? Is there any legal obstacle to prohibiting certain breeds? (I’m not talking about service or comfort animals…just “pets”). Can I pick any breeds I want and list them on my tenant criteria as "won't accept"?

I've already been attacked by one pit bull mix. But there are other breeds that are high on the aggression list such as Chow and Rottweiler...what do you folks think?

Heck, I've seen some pretty mean Daschunds too lol. --99.92.xxx.xxx

The following breeds or mixes of these breeds are not allowed: Pitbull, Rottweiler, German Shepherd, “Husky,” Alaskan Malamute, Doberman Pincher, Chow Chow, Great Dane, St. Bernard, Akita, Wolf Hybrids.

I also require that I meet all pets as part of the in-home inspection. In addition to hygiene, I'm looking for aggressive behavior. --70.178.x.xx

I don't care what breed they are. We won't accept aggressive behaviors. If we can't get in the house without the owner being present (once we have been properly introduced of course) that dog has to go.

I've seen Pomeranians that were more vicious than a German Shepherd.

We just want goofy friendly family dogs, not guard dogs. --50.82.xxx.xx

If the breed is on the "dangerous" list from my insurance company, I do not allow it to be on my rental property. --68.205.xxx.xxx

I also use the list from my insurance company. Which is more extensive than yours Cane corso and presa canario, staffordshire terriers and Mastiffs are on that list. (St Bernards are not). Those are non negotiable because my insurance says so. Otherwise, the dog has to be non-aggressive to me when I meet it with its owner on its territory. I need to know that in can go it the house in an emergency.

Some of the banned breeds are very sweet dogs, but I can't allow it because of my insurance. Some of the non banned breeds are aggressive and I won't allow for safety and liability reasons. Overall, I much prefer a larger dog over the little ankle biting, yippers. Those little ones are just annoying. --108.44.xx.xxx

Obviously the tow truck dogs can take a big bite when they do so those are unable to visit the property, I do not allow pet sitting or visiting, my insurance requires photo vet records - and our office has the common 150bux registration fee once we do a meet-the-dog visit, also a renters insurance policy where owner is named on the front page and we get a copy before keys are issued - a dog bite will cost as much or more than 6 months of running water and electricity combined. --76.188.xxx.xx

Our insurance company, State Farm, does not have any breed restrictions so we accept all breeds and all sizes. --71.75.xx.xx

You can google the list of breeds insurances don't like. Even if your insurance accepts any breed, you can always say, "these breeds are not accepted by insurance companies".

I know a vet tech with lots of experience. She says she would never get a dog from the aggressive breeds. "They can just turn in a second" and no sense in taking a chance... She had a German Shepard for many years and said she would not get one again. That tells me a lot.

A lot of times it is the owner, but why take a chance.

Even my wonderful lovable lazy old lab does not like it when I touch her feet and she will let me know. (Funny because she lets the vet tech trim her nails with no problem). --108.44.xx.xxx

Yes the Pitbull, Rottweiler, German Shepherd, “Husky,” Alaskan Malamute, Doberman Pincher, Chow Chow, Great Dane, St. Bernard, Akita, Wolf Hybrids are on the insurance list do not like.

HOWEVER, yellow labs did not make the list and I have seen an aggressive yellow lab. It also depends on blood line, training, etc however as a landlord you don't have the time to check bloodline. If you accept dogs a Home Visit will tell you a lot about the dog and how your unit will be maintained. --99.56.xx.xx

I don't allow the insurance list dogs, plus quite a few other breeds like Tosa, Presa, Dogo, any of the Russian shepherds, Russian Black Terrier, Kerry blue terrier, azawahk ( not that a tenant is ever going to afford one of those), American bulldog.

Several of the breeds on the insurance company's list I would allow if they passed the interview, but I can't take them. --174.216.xx.xxx

Hoosier,

I've seen some vicious wiener dogs! SHARP teeth!

With all the commotion over banned breeds has ANYONE EVERY been personally dropped by their ins co?

When I asked my local dog catcher how to spot a pitbull for "insurance" co, he said "They're all mixed breed, so none are a true pitbull (unless you're talking to a $1000 per pup breeder)

No gambling - we meet the animal at the 2 Minute In Home Visit. Barking and wiggling is normal, baring teeth is a no.

On the visit I'm mostly checking the OWNER for proper care and control of the dog.

BRAD

You're coming down the home stretch!

I once had 6 belly bites from a Rhodesian Ridgeback! Beautiful dog but LARGER than a pit and just as unpredictable.

Every big dog needs an area large enough to run around. My backyards are large enough. A large dog in a tiny enclosed yard gets anxious and wound up and has no place to release that energy, other than aggression. So it is not just the breed (tho that is imp) but the size& temperament must fit the location. --108.87.xx.xxx
