This question is not as fun as the subject line might indicate. I am having granite (higher end rental) installed on new wood cabinets today. I called the cabinet place before giving the granite guys the green light because the island had not been attached to the floor like I presumed it would be. The cabinet place said they don't normally anchor an island and that the granite will keep it from moving when you don't want it to. Does that sound right? My concern is that there will be a 9 or 10" overhang (for a couple bar stools) and I obviously don't want it to tip over because the weight is evenly distributed over the cabinet. Am I concerned about nothing or should I get in the crawl space and screw it down myself? I put hardwoods in the kitchen so there is no tile to worry about. Thanks.

The cabinet guys sound like hacks. Islands need to be anchored for many reasons.. is it literally just unattached to anything? --174.234.xxx.x

Lightly trace around the base cabinets with a pencil on the floor. Remove the cabinets. Mount 2x4 framing to the floor with a 5/8" setback. Reinstall cabinets and screw the bottoms to the 2x4's and trim the base.

Or build a knee wall. Knee walls are usually the best bet. --174.201.xx.xxx

MUST be affixed. NEpa has it right. Solid install that way and wont tip. Unsecured, you might as well go wait at the courthouse for the lawsuit. --137.119.xxx.xxx

You're correct the island should be anchored especially where there is going to be an overhang.

Unless the granite guys installed the cabinets, I wouldn't expect them to anchor the island.

We do something similar to what NE [PA] suggested. --72.93.xxx.xxx

you have your answer on anchoring...but you also mentioned that overhang. IMO you should have some supports under the granite that stick out from the island...Google "counter supports" and you'll see some images. --99.92.xxx.xxx

I design kitchens at one of the box stores. Your island cabinets most definitely should be anchored. Our granite installers will not install on cabinets that are not anchored, even a rolling island. The liability if the island tipped over is too great. ESPECIALLY with an overhang.

As to needing support brackets. Up 10-12 inches(may vary from one fabricator to another) maximum overhang, but not more than 1/3 of the total width of the granite. 2/3 of the width must be cabinets. Since this is a rental, I would spend the extra for brackets. Federal Brace makes a really nice hidden bracket. --70.16.xx.xxx

If you choose to anchor. Get island where you want it. Put some blue tape around the outside of the kick board where you will be anchoring it. Move the island off the tape. Apply 2x4s inside the blue tape (keep then away from the blue tape appx depth of toe kick. Preplace the island and fasten toe kick to 2x4s. --173.15.xx.xxx

Are you serious the installer said the grant top will hold the island in place. Find another installer. UNLESS in big red warning letters etched into the island PLEASE DO NOT SIT ON THE ISLAND IT MAY TIP OVER. We all know this will not happen PLUS if the warning label was there some tenant would sit on the island.

You may want to check the wall cabinet installation to make sure they are installed properly. Maybe they used finish nails or silly putty to install the wall cabinets!!! The base cabinets might be attached??? OH DON't worry the granite will hold them in place TOO.

Absolutely anchor the island to the floor.

MAYBE the hack installer will use a thru bolt. drilling into the countertop to the basement ceiling and install several thru bolts to hold the island. And these guys get paid to install cabinets and are SKILLED labor. OK best of success

HOWEVER what do you expect to get when paying minimum wage to these installers.

OH Marv of IL it just clicked the installer could use Gorilla Tape to STRAP the island to da floor. NEVER know what a hack will do to make it work??? --99.56.xx.xx

Rangor,

My granite guy taught me that granite is brittle and will easily crack over time is their is the SLIGHTEST gap or movement.

The whiter the granite the more brittle.

He requires we have the cabinets PERFECTLY aligned and solid before he arrives. He checks this when he does the template for the crew in the cutting shop. We often have to add extra "nailers" for support.

on our 9" overhang he required metal brackets. I prefer these to larger wooden knee banger braces.

At final fitting his crew uses playing cards as shims - he says it must be THAT precise.

I have seen MANY cracked tops in homes and hotels.

We saved a seat for you at Convention dinner but when you didn't show I ate your dessert.

BRAD.

I owned a granite shop for more than a decade. 10in is the maximum unsupported overhang for granite that should be allowed. Certain stones are more prone to break and we'd install plate steel, steel brackets or some sort of decorative corbel in those cases or in the case of a larger overhang. --24.3.xxx.xxx
