I have a house in a borough and there is a storm drain right in front of the mail box. It's probably a 12" black pipe that drops 2' then elbows and goes under the road.

The metal grate must have been covered with dirt and stones, because this is the first I've seen it. It has rusted out and it won't be too long until someone is capable of falling through and would probably cut their leg really badly on the metal.

I've called the borough, they are notorious for not returning calls.

Any idea what can be done?

Put up some red cones and pretend you are fixing it. The city will show up right away and want to know why.

Let them take it from there.

Otherwise, call the local TV station, they love human interest stories (my kid almost fell in!) --66.188.xx.xxx

If I can't find a resolution, I may just dump a bunch of bags of quikcrete down there. --174.201.xx.xxx

Does it actually water? Is it a benefit for you at a low area?

I would send a certified letter about it being a hazard as someone could fall thru.

This becomes a much bigger liability for them since they cant say they did not know about it.

Be careful just pouring concrete down there. Last thing you need is to be seen and have to pay a city approved expensive contractor to replace the drain.

My last choice would be rock in a plastic bag to make a plug. Then more loose gravel on top so you only have to put a inch of concrete.

Just as easy and worse case you could bust out the concrete and put it back they way it was without a lot of work. --73.152.xx.xxx

A certified letter could make them liable when someone does fall thru.. also, your town alderman or other local official.. lastly, the streets dept or public works... --174.234.xxx.xx

First I call the proper City Department that handles the storm drains, like the Department of Sanitation.

Second, after nothing was done and some time passed, I put a trash can over the grate with yellow caution tape.

Third I call the City Hot Line for problems, sometimes 311, and report the problem again.

Forth I then contact my local City Councilman and report the issue again, telling them the trouble I've had dealing directly with the City and the Department. I give them names, dates and numbers I called -- via a fax or email and over the phone.

Most time the Councilman will send a message with the issues and the proper department must answer the message within 3 day, or funding for their department will be cut or stopped!

The last time a pot hole was in front of a rental of mine and no one would fix it. I pulled a permit and did the work myself, I'm a licensed A,B,C contractor. I then submitted a huge bill to the city and settled on half. --47.156.xx.xx

May have to go see the town officials responsible. I always go to the permit office as phone calls don't get returned. --73.178.xxx.xx

After you make several attempts to contact the proper department and city council member for your area. Also you document your calls.

Place a garbage can with caution tap over the drainage area.

Also get some 3' x 3' plywood paint a sign yellow with black letters. CAUTION! Dangerous! City Won't Fix It!!! Tax Dollars Not Working!!!

You got their attention and newspaper and maybe local TV as well. Election Year not good PR for re-election...

If you do this you want to make sure ALL your properties in the city are in great shape because the city will have you on their radar. Zoning violations etc. If you have a different LLC's for this property then it may not be an issue. --99.56.xx.xx
