Every other year the city re-evaluates the property value. The city sent out request for current rent rolls of my small commercial multifamilies.

The current rent roll obviously is higher than 2 years ago. I am not sure how it will impact me if I mail them back.. I plan to ignore it..

Anyone has any experience in that area?

Your rents have got to be way less than 2 years ago!

Wow. They really want you to send that in?

Your city's tax assessments have to be all over the map with that type of honor system. --74.37.xx.xx

Not positive, but it sounds to me like you're asking for ideas on how to cheat on your taxes. I hope I'm wrong. --68.156.xx.xx

My attorney told me “not without a court order” when I asked if I had to provide that a few years ago. They wanted copies of my leases and tax return.

I decided that unless it would get me lower taxes, no way was I giving the county that info. --64.251.xxx.xxx

I think there are 2 ways to do multi property assessment. One is physical and the other is using an income based formula. We do not respond.

We rarely respond either. It's not about cheating on taxes, more about not giving them any more info than we have to. In NJ, if you argue your taxes and are successful in lowering them, you are required to give the savings back to your tenants. The state figures that your rent is based partly on the taxes you pay, so any savings should go to the tenants. What this really means, is there is no point in arguing your property taxes. --23.30.xx.xxx

Wow NJ! If I appealed and won, no way would I give it back to the tenants. What kind of law is that? What about utilities and discounted contractor bids? It's no different.

They'd have to sue me.

I hope NHsailmaker reads this. That's insane. --174.201.xx.xx
