We have the usual crew of people that we work with, but every spring we look for the porches painters, shrubbery trimmers, hallway painters, basement clean out people. So we got an ad running and I have been interviewing people. Got a really nice guy cleaning up the yards, dump runs etc.

Interviewed one of the those loud mouth can do and have done everything types yesterday. I lay out the whole plan to them, we got plenty of work as long as we can afford your price. Showed him a 18 in by 18 ceiling hole where plumber had to get to fix frozen pipes and the paint small 4x 4 bath ceiling. Maybe take someone 7 hrs max to fix. He comes back at $300 and his rate was $20 an hr. I replied so you are telling me it going to take you mr wonderful 3 days to fix! Problem they think I was born yesterday. --74.104.xxx.xxx

Is that for labor only, and you are providing all the materials? If it includes shopping, buying & hauling the drywall & paint - it doesn't sound TOO outrageous to me. But, also not like he needs work too badly. Maybe a couple hundred for shopping plus 10 hrs labor. --68.10.xxx.xxx

A variation of this topic has been coming up locally.

I swam against the current and decided I would do as much as I can on my own for a while. Revamped my whole operation to do so.

However, I know I'll need help sometime. However people want $15 and hour. People who don't have any skills. No complaints from me, but if my no-skills want $15...I'm wondering what the dependable types will want.

Here again, your $300 bid may not be too uncommon.

I pay $15 per hour for my current handyman with bonuses for really big jobs done well. He is the difference between being able to be in control(most of the time) of repairs and upgrades and being miserable. In the past 7 years I have had some real losers working for me. One handyman taught me a bunch of dirty tricks like buying pressure treated wood for step repair, taking it back for plain sticks, and pocketing the cash difference. --216.23.xxx.xx
