what do you think about range hoods that don't vent outside? I think they are useless, but I'm updating a unit and it has an old, old one and it kind of makes sense to put something where there was something. Not possible at this time to make it go outside. --24.194.xx.xx

replacement hoods are cheap and something is better than nothing.Every bit of grease the filter catches is a bit you don't have to clean at turnover. --67.186.xxx.xxx

Half our houses have ventless hoods. It IS better than nothing. Change the filter as often as i change the tenants about once every 2 years. --99.103.xxx.xxx

I used to think I would want to put vented hoods in my houses, as all of my tenants deep fry. Contractor friend kept warning me about grease fires; she had redone several kitchens for clients who'd had grease fires.

I went the route of ventless, very happy with it. Kitchens have been getting less greasy, and a big plus, better lighter for safer cooking. My old houses have terrible lighting!

Tenants like them for lighting, AND, ALL smoke detectors have been left in place since the range hoods went in!!!! That right there has been worth it.

If I scrounge, I can usually get an used one for less than five bucks. Clean it, paint it, new filter, still well under $20, but I have had to get Sparky in there to wire it. (Me and electricity- nope, nope, nope.) --172.56.xx.xxx

Should be ok for electric stove but it does not vent out the carbon monoxide caused by a gas stove. My fan which vents outside, went bad and pretty soon my CO detector that has a readout, was near 60 PPM which would pretty soon set it off. Also I felt tired. I realized what was going on and I prop the door to the porch open while waiting for the electrician to come and put the new one up. If people think they are venting out CO you are putting them in a bad position. --73.178.xxx.xx

Any stove putting out CO like that need repaired NOW!!! Range hood isn't for venting CO the way the vent on a water heater or furnace does.

But, Ally, I am very glad you were OK.

Didn't mean to yell, but gas and electrical safety is very important to me, and you are important to this forum. I have my HVAC guys do a water heater, stove and dryer check when they do my furnace tune-up, since they have nice, expensive CO meters, which are calibrated frequently. --172.56.xx.xx

true story. had a tenant that was so filthy the co2 went off. Fire marshall said it was from rotting food on stove-- not stove itself.

Hoosier - while microwave exhaust recirculators post is similar, the question was about range hoods which may not be part of an over the stove microwave oven. Do your comments in the other post hold for a range hood not part of a microwave? --67.186.xxx.xxx

I do not have a hood over or by my cook top (gas). But I also don't do much cooking with grease. We can open windows on both sides and vent a lot out. I would and have put in a ventless hood where it was too far from a wall. They are better than nothing, they also have lights in them that are useful. They are not that expensive, so it also dresses the place up.

In your case, I would replace it. It won't make things worse. --108.44.xx.xxx

Thanks for your feedback. It improved my opinion of ventless hoods. and I usually see them at habitat for 10 to 20 bucks.

My tenants typically cook greasy. Had one mother daughter house burn down from a grease fire on the stove --66.87.xxx.xxx

Hoosier, I skip posts whose titles don't interest me. I don't have any notifications coming from this or any forum, social media outlet, so I don't have to listen to ding, ding, ding all day. Works for me.

I, personally, like seeing more posts, even if repetitive. My inner Agony Aunt likes the chance to beat a topic to death, lol! I'll bet there was new information in this thread not covered in the microwave thread (wouldn't know, don't supply microwaves, never opened that thread.)

Who knew rotting food could set off detectors ?!? Yuck is right. --172.56.xx.xxx
