I recently had a maintenance person install some smoke detectors & CO2 detectors. I'm looking for opinion of value.
4 units, all doors within 3 feet of each other (common hallway with 2 across from 2)
In each unit:
2 battery operated smoke detectors AND
1 battery operated CO2 Detector
He is charging me $120 per unit.

Battery operated or hard wired?
If battery operated and 2 screws per alarm and about a minute to install each. 12 alarms = 12 minutes, plus a minute to walk between each unit. So 15 minutes for $460
$1,840 an hour? When do you need it done? I'll fly out.
If they're hard wired, I'd say that's not too bad if hired out. That all depends on running wires, etc.. --50.32.xxx.xx |

Most people don't think of the overhead associated with doing such a job. The guy had to answer the phone, drive out there to see what you wanted, and later he'll have to create an invoice, then drive to the bank to deposit your check.
I do think $120 sounds high to mount 3 detectors. I'd say half of that is reasonable...especially if you have more than one unit as you say. --99.92.xxx.xxx |

NO. You can do this unless you can't get up on a step stool. You can put sticky Velcro on the wall and on the detector and just slap them up there. The fire inspector told me to do that actually. --73.178.xxx.xx |

First, they are CO detectors, carbon monoxide (one oxygen in the molecule) CO2 has two oxygen so it is stable and mostly not harmful, in fact plants use it.

I got a fellow landlord on sale from Home Depot Smoke and C/O sensors for half price. Then the landlord dragged his feet on doing the installation.
He didn't know how to measure 9" to 12" down from a ceiling and mount the brackets with two screw, he only had a Masters in mathematics.
In the box the manufacture's provide installation instructions.
So instead of paying someone to install them, he had a costly fire and his insurance was void not having the necessary safety devices. --47.156.xx.xx |

I left out the parts stating that they are all battery operated & the price did not include the materials. He charged me what he paid for them at Home Depot. That part I don't have an issue with. Or even paying for his time to go & get them....
He did not need to go to the units before hand. He is already familiar with the property, as he's done work for me in the past. I don't usually hire him anymore, as he's known to 1.) hire out the work & then charge me an up-charge on top of the too high prices his "workers" charged him. Once I set him straight on that... 2.) He still thinks his work is valued higher than I think it is.
I was selling the building & needed him to take care of it so that I didn't have to. It's a 3 hr drive, one way, & I'm pretty sure he's figured out that I only hire him when I'm desperate.... My handy man had taken a job on the oil rigs.

A better option is to install a single zone fire panel system where smoke sensors in the hallways and heat sensors in the apartments are connected to the central fire panel. Here some apartment buildings have a wired smoke alarm with battery back up which is essential to conform to the fire code. When a fire happens in a rental building damage, injury or loss of life can occur where spending on safety equipment seems expensive where in reality minimizes damage along with injury or loss of life is less costly. The faster the fire department comes over the less damage is done to the residential complex. If a carbon monoxide is required then a wired smoke alarm with carbon monoxide can be installed at one location with a combination unit. Never regretted installing a central fire alarm in apartment buildings where when there was a fire damage was minimized. It is not the cause of a fire but rather was there fire safety equipment in place. --147.194.xxx.xx |

The value of an item or service is the price someone will pay to buy it and the price someone is willing to sell it if it is the same. So this is not its value to you. I tend to do this type of task myself because I will not pay someone the amount needed to do it.
Are you willing to pay $500 to have this done. If you can't find another handy person, do it yourself and your time will be worth $1840 per hour. You will save yourself $500. --108.44.xx.xxx |

Landgoddess, if its only labor he charged way far too much.
Ive installed these detectors many times in rentals. Even carefully locating detectors as per manufacturers instructions, using proper screws and anchoring plugs, it sohldnt take more tan 10 min for each detector.
Thats $120 for 30 mins actual work. Factoring in time to buy detectors, transport tools, write invoice, I would think 50 to 60 dollars max per unit would be reasonable. He is accepting some responsibilty in their placement in the apts. --70.31.xx.xxx |

For those espousing that it only takes one minute to install, so you should be charged for about a minute's work I say B.S. If you purchase the detectors in the plastic packaging it takes about 10 minutes just to get the package opened and it usually deserves hazardous duty pay.
