I recently installed a gas water heater that came with a filter screen that is supposed to go around the bottom of the heater.

I was going to install it but then I read the instructions. They call for periodically cleaning it every 3-6 months. Who does that?

Thoughts?

I am a Licensed Plumbing Contractor and trained water heater expert! If you do NOT install the air inlet filter, then lint can get into the grill under the unit and clog it up, thus restricting the air flow into the burner chamber.

This will cause the air temperature to rise above normal and cause the thermocouple to burn out -- a safety feature.

Who cares about that, you should. The time to remove the burner assembly and replace the pilot/thermocouple kit can run between 2 to 3 hours, for a normal technician. Also the burner gaskets have to be changed, some have one others have 3 gaskets.

You bill from a plumber to then replace/repair a burned out "special type" thermocouple and kit will range between $150 to $350. That's a lot of money instead of cleaning the filter screen around the water heater twice a year.....

Inside air can have dust where if possible have the combustion come from outside. With a small air compressor or shop vac it should not take that long to clean the filter. After a period of time inspect the filter then see if light passes through filter. A demand water heater fires at higher rate then a direct fired hot water tank as the storage compensates for the smaller burner. Usually the firing rate on demand water heater usually exceed the output of a furnace by two to four times. So a lot of air is required if the water heater is running more faucet or combination of demand. A demand water heater can easily heat a house where some jurisdictions a boiler is only allowed. --147.194.xxx.xx

The cat that snuck inside cleans this, put peanut butter there for a mouse, if it is a wet basement a snake may get the mouse first and sleep there cozy as ever, you have to get the snake out or bring in a large bird. the heater runs all this time until the water rises and then the interior screen get blocked - this bottom panel is designed to rust almost instantly so then you have to loosen the door to get air inside, if you save the burner from an older tank none of these problems arise. --76.188.xxx.xx
