Does it make a big difference whether you choose to have the microwave attached to the house's exhaust vent, or use the recirculating option? I know that you have to change a charcoal filter every so often with the recirculation option, but are there any other issues with choosing this? Thanks.

Well it might actually work! Where we can we are venting to the outside.

Recirculating is bad for grease particles. It disperses them farther. Best to remove them. However it must pipe all the way to the outside. Don't just port it to attic. Fire hazard. --108.69.xxx.xxx

I have a lot of experience with this as I'm a home inspector. Whether or not recirc option is an issue depends on how the people cook. If they cook many Asian or Indian dishes that require lots of frying, then recirc is a bad idea and you'll get grease and odors throughout the house. However, for most "normal" people recirc is not bad...we have recirc in our personal home for 19 years now with no issues. Venting outside is almost always better, but it is more expensive (buying a unit with an outside vent option is more expensive AND the install costs more, AND in some cases such as if the appliance is on an interior wall it can be VERY expensive to rout the vent outside. If you can "easily" vent outside...I'd go that route. --99.92.xxx.xxx

All of our properties have over the range microwaves ad they all recirculate. We've never had a problem and I sincerely doubt that my tenants ever clean the filter. Never had a problem. --71.75.xx.xx

As a contractor and landlord I dislike the re circulation feature on over the counter microwave ovens. The discharge vents on top of the microwave will then be drawn down wards into the intake filters, causing grease to be deposited all over the surface of the microwave.... --47.156.xx.xx

You are welcome, glad it was helpful. As a home inspector I hope I can be a good resource for some things. I've inspected over 1,400 homes...you see a lot of "stuff" in that time! --99.92.xxx.xxx
