I have 5” red clay tiles on my outdoor walkway. Every winter, the tiles come off. I want to replace them with bigger and thicker 18” pavers. What does everyone else use? --173.70.xxx.xxx

For myself I have slate sinking into the mud. No time for that. Have to keep the units nice. --73.178.xxx.xx

Well, I just have cheapo concrete pavers over tamped down sand on my farm. However, there are new membrane products that go under bricks or paving blocks. These provide weed protection, make installation easy (even with fancy patterns) -- at least according to the demo I saw AFTER we had installed our patio. Worth checking out. You tube "brick path installation". --98.146.xxx.xxx

Ron,the tile pop because the water gets in there and freezes it'll be the same with no matter what size you use.unless you can cover them in winter, whenever it rains.Almost impossible to do where you are.We used to use 5 or6" red clay tile in farmhouse kitchens in Northern Ireland, but they were inside so no problem ,in New Jersey North America different ball game, and that ball game isn't even Soccer, where you can't put a bob on the outcome......................charlie............................................. --174.199.x.xxx
