I've said it before. I'd sooner walk into furnace wearing a gasoline suit rather than go on facebook.

Here's an excerpt from a recent article from theguardian com. The webmaster for some reason won't allow the "paste" of the article.

====================================

Facebook accused of conducting mass surveillance through its apps

Company gathered data from texts and photos of users and their friends, court case claims.

Facebook used its apps to gather information about users and their friends, including some who had not signed up to the social network, reading their text messages, tracking their locations and accessing photos on their phones, a court case in California alleges.

The claims of what would amount to mass surveillance are part of a lawsuit brought against the company by the former startup Six4Three, listed in legal documents filed at the superior court in San Mateo as part of a court case that has been ongoing for more than two years.

A Facebook spokesperson said that Six4Three’s “claims have no merit, and we will continue to defend ourselves vigorously”. Facebook did not directly respond to questions about surveillance.

Note that the Facebook APP is a lot different than using Facebook on a PC. They are accusing the APP of looking at data that it shouldn't, just to note it.

Also, it is always very easy for someone that already never uses something to say to boycott it. :)

Gee, I don't recall asking anyone to boycott anything. There is a recent thread about FB and I added my personal preference and backed it up with a factual and interesting article about FB. BTW, I haven't traveled to Iran but have good reason to believe it's not a good idea based on the reality of Iran. Hope that helps you out there John. --73.195.xxx.xxx

Tony, I'm up here in Connecticut.Miss Ally,down your way had a bit of a problem with her Facebook account and did call for a Boycott.Im not sofficated enough to use it.,but all the phone services do the same thing,so none of your data is private anymore,they say it is , but that's a lot of bolony.I can tell because of things that happen.Just don't say anything you don't want repeated.As far as walking into a blazing furnace,I'd leave that to the stunt men,they're better able to handle it,even they would be a little Leary.......charlie...........................................just keep trucking................................. --174.199.x.xx

Tony: I know you didn't say boycott -- that was more from the other thread.

But, I can adjust it for here too if you'd like: It is always easier to tell someone to "say no" to something that others might want to use or do -- when they clearly have no intention at all of ever using or doing it themselves.

I don't believe your Iran analogy really holds up. There aren't a lot of people already out there going to Iran regularly and wanting to be in Iran every day for various reasons. Therefore, telling people to "say no to Iran" doesn't really have the same meaning. :)

The point about "not going to Iran" is like saying "don't stand in the middle of a four lane road". No one is really saying "don't go to Iran" and people get killed crossing four lane roads every day. Going to Iran might get someone locked up for no reason, like not wearing a veil when walking outside the home. Oh, I think that's a death penalty offense, ha ha. So it's best to avoid dangerous situations. Facebook could become a dangerous situation if someone gets offended and has enough information to find the person whose post offends them. Facebook would never notice a boycott. It's world wide. I now have a woman friend in Dubai who I helped when her dog passed away, and a couple of Hungarians who live down the road from where my grandmother lived before coming here in 1904. --73.178.xxx.xx

Facebook is difficult to use. I like more better Instagram.

There probably isn't a difference, other than one is easy to use.

Gathering info is what all companies do to some degree.
