I was in the drugstore earlier today and someone came in with a large dog with a "support dog" (instead of service animal) vest on it. He kind of butted in front of me in line (to buy cigarrettes). I didn't say anything.

Are support animals allowed in stores and businesses? I thought it was only service animals?

I think the new trend is to shop with your pets. I’ve seen little dogs in Michaels lately that weren’t in any kind of vest. Had someone look at an apartment that had a service animal but didn’t bother to bring it. Also had someone hesitate on the phone when I said no pets. When questioned further they said it’s only a 4 pound chihuahua. I said no pets and she said she was going to rehome it. I said no pets and she hung up. Pet Entitlement is the issue. --24.61.xxx.xx

Oh I never trust them when they say they'll get rid of the pets. A few years ago I had someone really obnoxious who told me about two pitbulls that he was going to get rid of. My statement to him was that he never would/should have told me about them if he was truly going to get rid of them. --72.188.xxx.xxx

I don't think much of a person that would get rid of pet(s) just to get a new place. UNLESS there is extenuating circumstances... money issues, allergies, mobility. --108.44.xx.xxx

Yes most stores will allow ESA's.

And I agree with Linda. Dogs are like family. I can't imagine us getting rid of ours. To me it just says they shouldn't have a dog if they can just nonchalantly let it go. --71.75.xx.xx

I think a lot of stores allow dogs now in part because they are scared of trying to determine what dog can and what dog cant come in so they just let them all in although my local Home Depot has a sign at the entrance saying only service anials can come in.My wife likes to go to PetSmart with our dogs which drives me nuts and a 1 time my golden retriever took a crap in the store, apparantly no big deal but I was glad I wasn't there.Every now and then at Lowes somebody is walking around with a pit bull and it always makes me nervous. --72.231.xxx.xxx

HD by me recently banned animals; must of had an incedent. Now they only allow service animals. The Lowes by me is pet friendly and there are at least 3 people who walk pigs around. My library has people who bring their dogs in, just seems odd to me. --24.194.xx.xx

I've seen them in HD recently so that must have been only one location that banned them. --72.188.xxx.xxx

Our library has people bring their trained therapy dogs in to the children’s room on specific days so kids can sign up ahead of time to read to the dogs. I know a child battling a brain tumor in the hospital and her favorite time is when the therapy dogs visit her. I have flown next to people with a large Shepard service dog that didn’t make a peep and someone with a so obvious fake service dog we wrote a letter to help the flight crew have additional documentation for the situation. I don’t have issues with the correct uses of trained animals. I have no patience for all the fake certificates and lying owners. --24.61.xxx.xx

To answer your question... Stores are NOT required by law to allow ESAs. If they have a "no animals" policy, then it absolutely would apply to ESAs. Only Service Animals, under the ADA, must be allowed.

The only places that MUST take ESAs are airlines and Landlords -- under two different federal laws.

That being said, many stores do allow them or, as said above, are too afraid of making a mistake to ask question to NOT allow them. :(

I just saw this again yesterday. I was in the Sprint store and someone had a dog with a blue lanyard that said "support animal" in large red letters. This must be a new trend. --72.188.xxx.xxx
