This biz is absolutely cyclical. The past few weeks have not been good one for me.

My maintenance man of 16 years died on the job. He was actually showing an open office over the weekend and had an AFIB attack. The EMTs were able to bring him back, but not until after six minutes had passed.

I routinely enjoy posting online as more than 60% of the issues people post about are short term items that will eventually work themselves out - given enough time. Losing a team member of over a decade will also work itself out, but it will take a bit more energy to overcome it.

I have hired a new cleaning person and moved the old cleaning person up a notch. They have the energy but not the know how at this point. I plan on slowly filling in these holes but filling the void of over a decade and half will take quite sometime.

The key will be to outsource as much as you can and staying focused on whatever is important today. Without a solid backup person at this one location, my week has been more of a game of whack a mole.

Guess I am just venting

Sorry to hear that Ray. I'm in the process of trying to build my team, but having had ups and downs like this in business generally, I can relate. If the business isn't doing well, we aren't well. --172.56.xx.xxx

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. It's hard to lose someone-- but to lose someone who's a valuable team member is especially hard, on both a personal and professional level. --96.46.xxx.xx

So they brought him back but six minutes could mean brain damage if no one was working on him. Is he dead or in the hospital with no brain activity? --73.178.xxx.xx

He was on life support for a few days before the family took him off.

The funeral was in the middle of the week.

Ray, I'm sorry for your loss. Not only are you missing a strong man on your team but someone who over time became a part of your life. You'll find echoes of him in the way he said or did things or how he laughed. It sounds like you have a strategy for the business side and are going through the process of grieving for the loss of a friend. --174.232.xxx.xxx

Sorry for your loss and the death of a friend. you can't work together that long and not be close. Sorry.

To your point: I've said this many times here and to my LL friends-- you gotta have a data base. keep it in your car, office work truck wherever. When you see gutter guys putting up gutters- stop get their info- put it in your data base. guys treanching for water line or tree guys- stop and check them out- put them on your list. We need more than one source for work to be done and not be heald over a barrel when we need help. --99.103.xxx.xxx
