Rocky Mountain National Park
We went through there last summer. Absolutely breathtaking. --166.137.xxx.xx |

I lived in Boulder for four years. We used to go camping in Rocky Mountain National Park. It was really awesome and has totally spoiled me from wanting to go camping in 99% of Texas...
I also remember going over to Central City in Colorado. I don't know how commercialized it is nowadays, but it was a cool outing-- a mining town from the silver rush days, although I think gambling is a big thing there now. You might check out one of the ghost towns along your route.
I did hear with Mt. Rushmore, you're not able to get very close to the sculpture at all. You can only see it from a significant distance.
Travel safely! --96.46.xxx.xx |

Colorado Springs. White water rafting through Royal Gorge is really fun. Cog Rail up to Pikes Peak or do a bike tour where they drop you off at the top and you tour down, Garden of the God's, day trip over to Cripple Creek to go through the mine tour, stop off at Focus on the Family for the kids, tour the Air Force Academy and the Olympics training center, day trip over to the Great Sand Dunes national park. We stay at the Garden of the Gods RV park which is pretty nice. Lots of interesting things to keep you busy in the area.
Ourey Colorado. Rent a jeep and 4 wheel through the most rugged mountains you have ever seen then spend the evening in the hot springs pool taking the jolts out of your muscles. Ride the Durango/Silverton railroad which is a few miles away. Day trip over to the Canyon of the Anchients. Visit the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. The million dollar highway between Ourey and Silverton will make you pucker in your seat. 4J+11 campground is right by the hot springs pool in Ourey. Swing by Taos NM on your way back and see the pueblos, and old town.
Yellowstone and Grand Tetons is a top destination, you have to do it at least once in your life. The most beautiful place I think I've ever been to, although the crowds are getting worse so try to go early or late summer and make RV reservations 6-8 months in advance if you want to stay in the park.
4 corners, good for a quick stop. I wasn't impressed.
Hot springs, interesting for a day or two but I would do Branson over Hot Springs. If you go down that way stop off at Crater of Diamonds State Park and hunt for Diamonds, the kids will enjoy it. Summer can be brutal which is why those of us who live down here in the mid-west go North or to the mountains for the summer. --50.26.xx.xxx |

The ultimate river rafting adventure is on the Selway River located in Idaho. My group flew into Missoula, MT and then boarded a bus which drove us 75 miles into the backwoods of Idaho. I did this trip 20 years ago and the Selway River has mostly Class 3 & 4 rapids with a couple of heart-pounding Class 5 rapids. The overnight rafting trip I was on lasted 3 nights and 4 days.
The only problem is you usually have to book the Selway River 1 year in advance but it well worth the wait. --68.63.xxx.xx |

Forget the Colorado for rafting, usually have to reserve far in advance, like a year, and it's too hot now till October.
The Amimas river in Durango is fun to inner tube.
The Arkansas river near Salida and Buena Vista CO is a good lesser known river with affordable trips.
25 years ago my crazy surfer friends and I boogie boarded about 20 miles on the Merced river. We wore helments, knee pads, dry suits with wet suits under, and still got banged up. It's illegal now, probably was then, but the upper Merced coming out of "Happy Isles" in Yosemite Valley is another E ticket trip for about a mile. Wear a full face motorcycle helment because your head will slam into rocks. The first ten miles outside the park is way too dangerous, not sure if anyone has ever run it. Boulders the size of houses, chutes and hydraulics you can never escape.
You know, fun stuff. ;)

I agree with all Mike(TX) said. Two weeks isn't enough, even for just Colorado. We have spent most of the past three summers exploring and still have so much to see.
This is a trip that can / will define your kids lives if done right. I still remember our family trip to Rky Mtn park in my Dad's '56 chevy. The road is like 11,000 feet!
Plan to boondock if necessary, rv sites will mostly be filled, forget anything around Yellowstone unless you off road it. Two summers ago we paid several hundred a night in Idaho Falls for a suite on the river. Was the closest decent hotel. Everything in West Yellowstone and Jackson is worn and bed buggy due to untold numbers of tourists, or is $1,000 a night.
There is lots of rafting and fishing on the Snake by Jackson. Jackson is nice, very expensive, but not Aspen expensive. The Grand Teton dwarfs everything for 100 miles around. One of the mystic places of the world. Don't miss it and Yellowstone.
Oh, and don't worry about Grizzly bears - we used to take a .44 magnum. But now I just carry a .22. If a bear attacks you in Yellowstone, just shoot the nearest Chinese tourist in the foot and run like hell! ;)
Plan on lunch in the cafeteria at the Yellowstone lodge, you can watch Old Faithful blow from your table.
We are planning to go gem mining on Mt. Antero in CO this summer and maybe raft the Arkansas river. (We have our own 14' Zodiac river boat.) Salida is surrounded by "Fourteeners," peaks over 14,000 feet. A couple hours away is Gunnison and the Crested Butte ski area, we try to get there every couple of years. I love it, but town is at 9,800 feet. We stay in Gunnison which is only about 7,000. Great dining in both.
Our unofficial "second home" is in Telluride. There is one small city campground. It will handle SMALL class C's, but the area isn't great for rv'ers unless you have a tow car. But for ten bucks a night... Telluride is also very high. Our vacation condo is at 9,600 ft and you have to ride a gondola to nearly 11,000 ft to reach it. We have to spend several days at a lower elevation to acclimate, and before we go again I'm going to buy an oxygen generator. You can also rent them locally.
The Imogene pass trail Mike was talking about is awesome. Go with someone else, in their jeep. Get out and walk the really scary parts and let the driver die alone. Jeeps go off the edge every summer.
From 4 corners (Telluride/Durango) it's about 4-5 hrs to the main Grand Canyon. Plan on lunch at the Tovar lodge on the rim. You only need one day at the canyon unless you plan to hike the Bright Angel trail - which I highly recommend you don't do with kids or without peak condition. People die there. Sadly the instagram selfie crowd has ruined Supai, where the famous falls are. You can bookdock outside the park if the rv parks are full.
This is just a taste. Have fun. --47.216.xx.xxx |

LeePookie,
Top Boy Scout trip was canoeing the Current River in Missouri. Spring fed water so clear you could see turtles on the bottom 30 feet deep.

Brad is correct. Current river is a n excellent choice for canoeing. If you go there also see Big Spring near Van Buren Missouri. World's largest sprain. Produces 846 million gallons of water a day. Nice little Hill / Mountain behind the spring for the kids to climb. Will use a lot of their energy. --67.45.xxx.xx |

Towing my boat from race to race I have seen all lower 48. Never took the same road twice. If you go to badlands ....before you go....make sure to watch the movie " Dances with wolves" staring Kevin Costner. That is what made me go. --24.34.xx.xxx |

A couple summers ago we stayed on a mountain in a converted railroad box car in Pitkin Colorado. It was one of the kids favorite trips. We explored everyday for 3 days on 4 wheelers, there are so many trails it’s almost endless and we just stayed in 1 area. It was pretty sweet! Mountains are...beautiful. --71.32.xxx.xx |
