I keep hearing about using FB to prescreen. most FB users set their pages private. How can you use those. also there are many people with same name. If someone just text or called, how can you be sure it's the same person?
can you guys share some tricks using FB to screen or prescreen?

I have a fake fb profile that I use for screening. I don't use my own because I don't want to show up as a "person they know" in their "suggestions".
In the search bar, I'll type their name and the state. (John Smith Oregon) and get good results.
There isn't a way that I'm aware of to get around privacy settings. --24.131.xx.xxx |

I use it in a similar way as Charlie. More and more people are setting things to private but many do not. I use it for screening once I have met them. It is amazing how many people have the same name even in the same area. One will be an upstanding citizen and the other a significant rap sheet. --24.61.xxx.xx |

I also use a fake Facebook profile. All the recent outrage over Facebook and privacy makes me laugh! All my info is fake anyway!
Search by phone number instead of name. --98.146.xxx.xxx |

Although the page is private there is still a lot of information there in the form of photos and the kinds of friends they have, how they dress. I saw the tenant of a mother daughter team on Facebook with drunkey party photos and references to wine. The mom was clean so I took them anyway and sure enough there was trouble with the wino daughter. Not enough to cost money but enough to cost time. And time is money. They stayed seven years but in the end they left a mess. --73.178.xxx.xx |

I only use Facebook when I advertise my rentals. So when they type “interested” or “like” my post and then fill out the application, I simply click on their name and see what I can see on their profiles. Some are immature enough to put something pot related under the about section for their job. Some have mutual friends so I ask those people I know what they know about this person. My sister has come in handy a lot. Quite a few times I’ll mention a name and she will say “No! Don’t rent to them! They just got evicted” or “their last landlord had a big mess with their pets” or whatever. My cousin has helped a lot too, knew about a girl that really lived with her parents and was getting kicked out, instead of the fake landlord she wrote on the app. Facebook is great. --173.26.xx.xxx |

So, just a couple quick things:
1. The statement that "most FB users set their pages private" is generally false. SOME do, but MOST do not.
2. To answer your question about finding them when they text or call -- you put their phone number into the search box. If they use the FB app, it will come up with their normal account unless they manually disable that -- which, again, is very rare.

For the people saying type in a phone number to search for Facebook people. I just tried it on 10 people that have Facebook and it does NOT work lol. Can’t even find my husband or my mom that way. --173.26.xx.xxx |

Then they may not use the FB app on their phone.
I won't find my wife or my mom that way either. But that group doesn't make up most of our applicants.
I find matching FB accounts by phone number for at least half of our applicants.
If most of your attempts are for people over 40, you might have different results. Most of our applicants are between 18 and 35 -- and, as I said, I get matches on at least half of them.
Note that FB did just recently redo their privacy settings yet again with the recent breach. So, it is possible that it is more locked down now than it was even a week or two ago.

Matt,
Wifey is our in-house FB slueth.
Because she’s FREE!!! she’s with her Momma for Mother’s Day.
I THINK she said she can come in the backdoor by going to their friends’ pages then back into the applicant’s or skipper’s page.
She’ll go to some popular public pages like local garage sale, baby stuff for sale, or local news and search for the applicant / skipper.
We also use a whole list of sites such as The Knot.com (weddings) etc.

Yeah... I tried phone numbers for my husband, Mom and several friends which all have the Facebook app. Tried each number with area code and each number without. No matches found either way. Maybe if they don’t list their number on Facebook it doesn’t work that way? Like mine I list it but set it privacy for only me to see it.... Not sure --173.26.xx.xxx |

Profile pics can never be private. Former profile pics also remain open to the public unless the user goes and deletes them all. All of the comments on these pics are also available. More leads. Click on the profiles of the people leaving comments and look at their pics--your target will be in some of them.
Also, many people have their info open to "friends of friends." They then make friends with someone who has 5,000 friends, like a dj or promoter. Guess what, if you are also that guy's friend then you can see everything. --73.141.xxx.xxx |

Shelby: Are you including the dashes in the phone number? It needs to be 555-555-5555 in the search box.
Actually, I take that back. I just went and did it for my last 5 applications -- 3 of which pulled up fine when I checked them before -- and NONE of them came up.
It looks like Facebook just changed this after the recent privacy leak issues from just a couple of weeks ago.

Fb is not as open as it used to be because Fb changed the default settings from everything being "open to public" to more restrictive versions. Thye also now have a "button" that says "view as." This lets the member see how a nonfriend member of the public sees his page. --70.90.xx.xxx |

Oh Wow, so sorry to hear FB has changed that about looking by phone number. I counted that as one of the BEST tricks I've learned on here. I may have passed on someone because of trash talk or 420 stuff on their page and been wrong but I don't think so. --71.51.xxx.xxx |

Also, to be clear, in the recent past, even with the default settings no longer being open to the public, the trick to find a person by phone number worked for EVERYONE that had the app installed. It worked even for profiles were everything was set to "friends only."
This very recent change -- after the privacy/data leak stuff within the last month -- seems to have changed that finally, unfortunately.
