How do you guys separate your house stuff from home stuff?
When I get home from being out trying to "conquer my world", my wife starts chatting as soon as I walk in the door and the kids are all over me.
That's fine, except my brain is still in house mode.
It takes me time to process my day and get set up for tomorrow and purge my mind onto paper or organize other things, etc.
Once I get into home mode I'm fine, but if I do it before purging the thoughts of the day into tomorrow's plan, tomorrow tends to get SNAFU'd
Not always, but sometimes.
Thoughts?

In the car on your way home. Put the phone down, use the drive time to zone and transition. Sing. Sit in silence. Chill out. --99.203.xx.xx |

I agree with Plenty. If you have to pull over and sit in a county park for 30 minutes to wind down, do it. Go into your HOME to your WIFE and KIDS ready to deal. --50.82.xxx.xx |

I use the drive time as well.
Also when I get home I will frequently say hello to everyone and then go into my office to make some phone calls. Funny how many times no one will answer those calls. --166.137.xxx.xx |

Have you tried talking to your wife? Really!
Tell her what you said here - you need to write stuff down before you forget it, plan for tomorrow, etc. (Once you get this done, you can focus totally on her & kids without being distracted.) Like you are still at work for a certain amount of time after arriving home. Make it specific like "I need 15 minutes, then I'm all yours." Go straight to your home office when you arrive (use the back door if you have one), then make sure you really come out in "15 minutes", and give her a kiss and your attention. After a week or so, everybody should adapt.
Hopefully : ) --68.10.xxx.xxx |

Square breathing. Inhale for a count of 5 seconds, hold for a count of 5 seconds, exhale for a count of 5 seconds, hold for a count of 5 seconds.
Do this for 5 minutes. --72.172.xxx.xx |

Yes RB, I'm definetly a "honey how was your day" guy either.
I need to walk around a bit, grumble, Huff and puff and get into the home zone, then feed the chickens.
Ps, I think that the most you've ever written! Haha. --50.32.xxx.xxx |

Sisco, I've done that before!! I learned that from a nutritionist along time ago for sleep. When I can't sleep, I will do that if I remember to and it knocks you out pretty quick. --50.32.xxx.xxx |

The Trouble Tree
Author Unknown
The carpenter I hired to help me restore an old farmhouse had just finished a rough first day on the job. A flat tire made him lose an hour of work, his electric saw quit, and now his ancient pickup truck refused to start. While I drove him home, he sat in stony silence.
On arriving, he invited me in to meet his family. As we walked toward the front door, he paused briefly at a small tree, touching the tips of the branches with both hands. When opening the door he underwent an amazing transformation. His tanned face was wreathed in smiles and he hugged his two small children and gave his wife a kiss.
Afterward he walked me to the car. We passed the tree and my curiosity got the better of me. I asked him about what I had seen him do earlier.
"Oh, that's my trouble tree," he replied." I know I can't help having troubles on the job, but one thing's for sure, troubles don't belong in the house with my wife and the children. So I just hang them on the tree every night when I come home. Then in the morning I pick them up again."
He paused. "Funny thing is," he smiled, "when I come out in the morning to pick 'em up, there ain't nearly as many as I remember hanging up the night before."

I made a deal with the family. As a contractor I modified the house to give everyone something they wanted. My wife wanted a walk in closet, 200 square feet. My kids wanted a dedicated play room with games, etc. I wanted my own private entrance into my private 3/4 bathroom so when I came home I had a change to wash my face (shower), change my cloths and take a tinkle. All I needed was about 15 minutes to my self. Then I'd come out of my Man-Cave and spend time with the family. --47.156.xx.xx |

i dont. Ive tried to but failed. Im too small to hire others. Legislation here is landlord hostile, the risks are very real. The environment is far left wing. It was never this unfair and unbalanced in the almost 30 yeaers Ive been a landlord in ontario.
The phone rings at dinner.........another disaster........another tenant being unreasonable.....more stress................i turn on the news and more tenants are demanding more rights and polticians have no backbone or common sense.
Open my email and another tenant with problems.
The worry and stress often ruins my sleep, making me tired for the next day.
We dont have a 1031 here..selling means the loss of years of hard hard work in equity.
I have come to realize, over the years, Ive spoilt tenants. At first they may have appreciated the service and low rents.....but now its expected.
And its my fault.....as said here many times..you get what you allow. --70.48.xxx.xxx |

My teacher hubby had that problem, too. He didn't have much of a commute, and he just wanted to be home. When the kids were little, they were taught to run and hug Daddy, then make themselves scarce until it was time to help with dinner.
On a day that had been rough, he'd often either chop firewood for half an hour (great stress-buster), or head down to the basement to tinker. On a good day, we'd catch up on each other's day without kids tugging on us.
