Not sure if what I am seeing is correct, but I checked credit on a prospect this morning.

I collected the apps from the boyfriend and he said his girlfriend doesn't have any established credit yet. Ok, no big deal. His credit is good and he said it was, that's a plus in my book.

I pull her credit anyway and there is no established credit yet, so that checks out.

HOWEVER, on April 3rd, there were 12 inquiries on her credit report from companies from all over the place. Banks, commercial cards, etc. Is it possible that what I am seeing is identity theft?

I know I can't discuss credit with the prospects, but I'm not sure what to do in this case, if anything.

I have'nt seen that many inquiries in one day before on a credit report.

What do you think?

I'm sure you got authorization to run credit on her...give her a copy of the report. --107.77.xxx.x

Assuming you are approving them, which it sounds like you are, I'd tell her about the "annual credit report" site and encourage her to pull her own credit to see what she finds. Let her know which agency you used, and suggest she get that one, in particular.

Interesting note - the last time my bank pulled my credit for a loan, they gave me a photo copy of what they got. So, I don't understand why we can't do the same. --131.151.xx.xx

Also inform them to put a credit freeze on their account at all credit bureaus. If someone runs a credit report, they'll have to unlock it but other than that, the security outweighs the inconvenience. --108.69.xxx.xxx

As always, double check SS# and make photo copy of her driver's license.

You can't discuss her credit with him, but why can't you discuss it with her?

It is possible that she and boyfriend discussed her lack of credit and decided that she needed to do something to establish credit -- maybe she filled out a bunch of applications at the same time, and this triggered multiple inquiries all at once.

Skunky NO NO NO KY don't tell her to give out report. She is only the end user. She needs to get the form from credit place. Your accepting her so why be the good samaritan? you open yourself up to much liability disclosing credit reports. --99.103.xxx.xxx

myob - Assuming the girlfriend gave written permission, her report's run, and they're going to be accepted (ok that might be a few too many assumptions)....why not give the girlfriend her copy?

I wouldn't point out the weirdness NE sees upon handing it over, but it would grant an opportunity to review that she might otherwise miss. Educate on the liability here if you would? TY!

Skunk: You don't give out the copy because, in most cases, it violates the agreement that you have with the report provider. (There are exceptions in some states where you can (or even MUST) give it to them -- but not in most.) THAT is why you don't just give them a copy.

That being said, my reading of the agreement does not appear to limit me from telling them about an issue that popped up. I would have no problem telling her something along the lines of "Just so you know, I know you said that you have no credit established and that was accurate, but did you recently apply for a bunch of cards or open accounts at banks? Because there are a bunch of new requests for credit on there."

If they said that they didn't do it, then I'd tell them that they should probably go check their own stuff at annualcreditreport.com and/or creditkarma.com so that they can check for identity theft.

I don't see that that violates the FCRA or my agreement with my credit report provider -- unless I'm missing something in the fine print.
