Ceiling Paint Question (by Amy [NJ]) Posted on: Apr 23, 2018 6:25 AM

Hello board. I have a question about ceiling paint. I usually use the Sherman Williams CHB brand for ceilings or Behr ceiling paint depending on how bright I want the ceiling.

I am in New Jersey and they do not have CHB here at the store I was told, nor have they ever heard of it. I picked up some Behr and put two coats on a previously heavy damaged ceiling. After putting 4 gallons of Behr on there the ceiling looks good but not great.

There are light and dark spots galore and some sections that are kind of hazy. Can someone point me in the right direction on a proper ceiling paint that will cover and not have light/dark spots. I called up Sherman Williams and they said Extreme Cover. Even with a Contractors Discount that will cost 160 dollars for a 5 gallon container. Is that my best bet? Thank you.

Amy,

I have always used Kilz water based primer for ceilings. It dries down with a flat sheen which is what I prefer. Is there something 'special' about your ceilings here that would require a pricey ceiling paint? --68.63.xxx.xx

Nothing different about this ceiling other than it was very damaged and has had a lot of repairs with cracking. I am just so used to using CHB or Behr that I have never used anything else. The Behr didn't work and the CHB is not in this region.

I have used latex Killz before but never on a ceiling. Is Killz good with eliminating dark/light spots for ceilings? Thank you for your responses

Try a Good Quality Primer with a 1/2" Nap Roller.

The light and dark spots, are they from nicotine that wasn't removed? Are they from different plasters that might absorb more paint in spots and not in others? Are they stains from leaks from above? I use flat paint as it does not reflect light and covers imperfections but if there were stains and you are going to try another coat, you should put some kind of paint over the stains that is also a sealer. Others have told you the names. --69.141.xxx.xxx

Ceiling Paint Question (by Busy [WI]) Posted on: Apr 23, 2018 7:56 AM

I just used Zinzser ceiling paint on a heavily damaged dropped ceiling with very good results. I cut in all of the seams (14" tiles-ugh!) And rolled the ceiling twice. All the little digits 'disappeared' and the ceiling looks very uniform. I tend to paint very lightly, others might not need to roll twice.

Zinszer ceiling paint goes on pink, dries white. Keep the paint exposed to air as little as possible, the pink fades with being exposed to air. (By the time I'm at the bottom of a gallon, these old eyes can barely see the pink.)

Don't remember the price, but it seems readily available.

Anecdotally, I have heard that some paints that have the pink-to- white thing will turn punk in high humidity, (after the paint is dry, tenant takes shower, ceiling is pink, then dries back to white.) I haven't ever had that happen. --208.54.xx.xxx

Amy,

Due to roof leaks, which leaves dark water stains on ceilings, I use an oil based Kilz to cover over those stains. Once the ceiling stain disappears, I then either use Kilz oil or water base to paint the entire ceiling with. Oil base Kilz has a serious odor to it and you need to leave the windows open to get the stink out!

I use spray kilz on water spots-- whether on ceiling or walls. Then use kilz (not water based either) the original and roll the ceiling. If you can get them to tint it to GLIDDEN HIGH HIDING WHITE COLOR- KILZ MAY DO IT ONE COAT. --99.103.xxx.xxx

SW 700 primer finish is a great ceiling paint, doesn't flash as you described, and costs $10.00 gal less than SW Eminence ceiling white . --72.172.xxx.xx

All of the damage on the ceiling is gone and fixed. There is no discoloration anywhere and was none before I painted it. All the bad areas were primed already, cleaned and beautiful. I am getting flashing light/dark spots I cannot get rid of with the Behr paint and they have no SW CHB here. Should I go Killz Latex or Pro Mar 700 primer? --76.117.xxx.xx

RB, thank you. That is an excellent suggestion. I totally forgot I could go up from 3/8 nap to 1/2 inch nap for better coverage. Wow, never occurred to me to do that even though I always buy thicker naps for basements. Good stuff. Love all the feedback you all give. --76.117.xxx.xx

If there are serious water stains, soot, etc, I give it a thorough washing, let it dry then use 1 or 2 coats of oil base Kilz. If there isn't any staining or if I've already sealed the stains, I use the Kilz II water based as a primer & a finish paint for ceilings & closets. At my local HD the Kilz II in the 2 gallon buckets is a much better value than the ones or fives.

Flat white paint should not "flash" light. I assume you have smooth plaster patches and rougher parts of the ceiling. I hope you are using "flat" paint not satin or gloss. --69.141.xxx.xxx

I don't use ceiling paint. I use regular paint, Behr flat flat (not enamel), tinted snowy egret.

I always use a primer coat over new or repaired work, even if the paint has primer on it. It prevents different areas from absorbing the paint differently, which will give different Sheena to those areas. (As in sheetrock itself absorbs paint differently than the joint compound areas.) --64.222.xxx.xx

The answer is definitely the primer.

The flashing is caused by the paint soaking in differently at the repairs. If the ceiling is plaster, it could be that the repairs are smoother than the surrounding "wavy" plaster. That's a very common problem and one that is difficult to avoid.

Gripper (primer) is my go to primer. --74.124.xxx.xxx

IF you primed first then there should not be an issue. HOWEVER, the new material will have less paint than the old areas.

I do not like Behr paint nor SW and have used both. Primed first then used Behr, do not recall the name of it, but could see light and darker areas on the wall. When I repainted I used Benjamin Moore Ultra Spec 500 and it covers great.

Also if you had a tenant in since repairs were made and they smoked you may have nicotine bleeding thru did not use the proper primer for nicotine.

Try a spot with a better quality flat paint for the ceiling. Then let it dry and see what it looks like. If no change then use a better primer and finish coat. Maybe consider a second coat in a test area this may help. Some paints are as thin as water and poor hide factor. Buying cheaper paint is not always the best solution. --99.56.xx.xx
