So we were outside one of our townhouses today loading stuff in car after finishing (yay) rehab of one unit. It's a quadplex of townhouses.

Looked up at the place in satisfaction as we had it re-sided this winter and it looks really great...then noticed Unit A's blinds...from the outside.

O...M...G. All three of the other places have white blinds in the windows facing out.

The blinds in Unit A looked AMBER in color. Not just yellow...darker than that.

They both smoke and they've been there for years and years...but this was simply shocking.

If you smoke, I'll send you a picture...might help you quit... --50.82.xxx.xx

I've only seen one property like that. We had to tear everything out after she moved. I had quit smoking a few weeks before she moved out and looking at the walls and the stench in the house left an indelible impression. The few times over the years where I've been tempted to have a cigarette I think of that TH and and the temptation dissipates! --71.75.xx.xx

9 out of 10 renos we buy have terrible smoking/nicotine stains all over the ceilings. That's one of my favorite signs of forward progress-- that first stripe of stark white ceiling paint on a naaaaasty ceiling. :) --166.137.xxx.xxx

When time comes to clean it,..make sure to use gloves as we almost poisoned 3 of our cleaning ladies. They (and I) absorbed nicotine from the cleaning,..didn't know that could happen. In common,..no one slept that night. Heart palpitation, and one lady had a panic attack,.. --66.30.xx.xxx

Liquid Nicotine is a potent poison, Hollis. I remember G. Gordon Liddy talking about killing someone with nicotine on the point of a pencil or something way back in the day. I might have mixed things up but I remember the potent poison part. Spray cleaning fluid on cabinets and it starts to run down the face... --50.82.xxx.xx

I have seen it so thick on a TV screen that you could catch the edge of the film with your fingernail. Yuk, it was in my parents house, yeah they both died of smoking related illnesses. --68.60.xxx.xx

I have long term smokers in an apt that have actually turned the enanmel finish on the appliances PERMANENTLY beige from thier cigarette smoke.

I regularly have to replace the expensive AC smoke detectors in their apt, not because the detectors have reached their expiry date, but because the detectors are gummed up with nicotine. --70.48.xxx.xxx

Nicotine is in sunflower seeds in case you didn't know. When I feed birds, whichever feeder has those in it kills all the grass and weeds below it. I did use sunflower seeds way back when I wanted to quit smoking forty years ago. A spoonful of nice salty preshelled sunflowers seeds will supply enough nicotine so that you can pass up that cigarette. So the cleaning ladies were not wearing rubber gloves when they cleaned up the nicotine? --69.141.xxx.xxx

I once inherited a heavy-smoking tenant. When he moved out, there wasn't just yellow brown crud on the walls and ceilings. It was even inside the refrigerator. Whenever I think of that guy, I picture him sucking on a cigarette with his head in the fridge looking for a midnight snack. --66.213.xx.xx

Barbara -- we would not have believed it, had we not seen it ourselves, but it is true the INSIDE of the fridge was brown when a heavy smoker moved out of one of ours. The fridge quit working shortly thereafter. Had to wash the walls down down 3 times beforecwe could even paint.

We had another tenant complain his food in the fridge smelled like cigarette smoke, even though that one did not have a brown color, and had been thoughly cleaned and deoderized between tenants. --104.152.xx.xx

I can remember the film on everything in my mom's bedroom, which is where she retreated to smoke. Then she got COPD, followed by congestive heart failure. What a waste of a brilliant woman's life. --71.175.xxx.xx

I just had a prospect that met me at the unit. She claimed she did not smoke. 50ish lady with a terrible premature wrinkled skin for her age. She had that smokers voice and smelled so bad of smoking I had to hold my breath when she came near.

These people are nose dead to their smell. --66.30.xx.xxx

Jeff(CO)........I no longer accept smokers, although they will on occassion lie and slip thru the screening and lease process. But at least they really DO go outside to smoke.

Tweny years ago in toronto, smoking was much more common and a landlord had to accept it if they wanted to fill rentals in a timely manner. --70.48.xxx.xxx
