An applicant or a rental we manage has many DUI s on public record. Last one was a couple of years ago. Should I eliminate her from consideration? --24.233.xxx.xx

Do you have a written criteria for how you decide offer a lease? If not YOU NEED ONE!

As for a DUI, did they pay their bill from it? Do they have a license to drive now and a job? Are they clean now? Did they, for example, get a 12 month certificate from AA?

Your question is not easy to answer. Do you have other qualified applicants who Don't have a DUI? --64.251.xxx.xxx

I would. Hard to pay rent when you're in jail or fired from the job. --172.58.xxx.xx

HIPPA

Alcohol is considered an illness-- be careful. I would have to question the applicant one on one. If there recovering and been sober for several years i would consider.

I would also need to know if they've done jail time for it? --99.103.xxx.xxx

I would somehow. Poor decision making is not limited to alcohol consumption and they are not a protected class. --69.141.xxx.xxx

What does the civil record look like, and howz about the late payments on the credit report? DUI may be protected but unpaid bills is often the result and I just ask them to pay off old landlords and call me when the court reports a zero balance. --76.188.xxx.xx

DUIs are a killer in terms of expense, time off from work for court, counseling, victim impact panels. auto interlock, etc. I have a family member going through this right now for 1 DUI -- I can't imagine the cost of multiple DUIs.

I would pass on this applicant. I would also look closely at her employment stability. Hard to keep a job when you are an active alcoholic. --98.146.xxx.xxx

I had a tenant who when drunk had things come out of his mouth about me the landlord. Like Mel Gibson when he was stopped by the police. When not drunk, this tenant was normal. Alcohol changes peoples normal brain activity. So i do not rent to people who come home and get drunk on a regular basis. When I screen tenants not only do I call their landlord, previous landlord but also neighbors. --47.156.xx.xx
