One of our tenants just left a message that they were heating the oven and heard a loud cracking sound followed by the oven door shattering. It's a good stove. Any clues about why this might happen? Thanks.... --71.246.xxx.x

I had the same thing happen a few weeks ago at my home. We don't have any children in the house and my wife or myself haven't used the oven door for a step or a seat. The oven was a couple months old. The repairman said it happens it's stress from the thermal expansion. --68.60.xxx.xx

I confuse. It happened to me. The question to ask is "what happened right before that?"

In my case what happened right before the oven door cracked ( only the inside glass) was i had self cleaned and didnt let the glass cool all the way. Wiped with wet cloth to clean up the self clean white residue and the glass cracked.

It was not a cheap fix but ordered the part from Sears and with a handy hubby fixed one afternoon. --99.203.xx.xxx

If the stove is a Sears then avoid buying parts from Sears as there is additional mark up. Most Sears stoves are made by Frigidaire or Whirlpool. Take down the model, serial number then will be able to get a part number. Try some internet appliance parts for price then check out some appliance part companies. The door has to taken out then carefully disassembled then reassembled where cleaning all the parts to ensure a proper fit. --147.194.xxx.xxx

NC Investor's tip led me on an internet search, and it seems there are many instances of this. And the stove model in the home is one that is implicated in having the most reports of this, unfortunately. Apparently there can be tiny flaws in tempered glass eventually causing failure. I'd really prefer to have tenants provide their own stoves in the future!

Apparently this even happens with shower doors, but at least they're not hot when they shatter. There are several links about this, including some youtube videos. I'm guessing, sadly, that the manufacturing process is going down the tubes, like so much else in our world.

Repair Clinic.com, and a couple other companies. I have used Ebay with success, just make sure you have the right part # and deal with the ones that have the reputable dealer insignia. --71.51.xxx.xxx

Of course not made for the high oven cleaning temps. Baking dish exploded. Blew out the glass in the oven door. --73.152.xx.xxx
