State Specific Question About: KANSAS (KS)
I need to remove carpet from an upstairs bedroom. It is above a garage. The garage ceiling is insulated and sheetrocked.
What is the best solution for new flooring? I do hope for some insulating qualities. --76.219.xxx.xxx |

Olefin Berber carpeting with a thick pad. Do you not thing air from the frigid garage below will get up into the area? I have one like that. It's very cold and I had to add baseboard electric heating for the tenant to even use it. I hope it's not heated with hot water heat as mine was because it froze one bitter windy day and is now gone. --69.141.xxx.xxx |

Home Depot has a new type of Allure flooring: it comes with a built-in pad, is water-proof and clicks together. I want someone to try it and tell me how it works for them! Maybe this is my chance! ;)
We put regular Allure in top-floor garage apartment and she likes it just fine. --50.82.xxx.xx |

Rob Lane of KS, hmmm over a garage can be two issues: insulation and sound PLUS a third issue fumes from cars and other stuff stored in the garage. Make certain the ceiling in the garage is sealed around the edges and around the lighting. IF there are any air vents in the garage from the heating/cooling system you may want to close them off due to possible fumes drafting into the living space from the garage.
Insulation value vs sound deadening value???
The ceiling is insulated hopefully done properly. Spray foam would work the best to help seal the ceiling and deaden the sound, as well.
Go to soundproofcow.com they have a 1" x 4' x 4' Echo Absorber Acoustic Panel @ $40 a panel. That's $2.50 a square foot cost factor not including the finish material for the floor.
Its main purpose is for sound deadening. However there may be some r value to it not sure what it may be. The main purpose is for reducing sound.
Adding 1" to the floor may create a trip hazard from one room to the next???
How durable is the material over time and depending how its installed will there be speaking floors with screws. It maybe a glue down for the panel I did not read the installation factors.
I have never used the panel so not sure the pros and cons of it. PLUS it's a pricey product for the floor.
If this is a rental I would install a hardwood floor it has more insulation factor than a vinyl click floor due to a 1/2 to 3/4 in thickness. Yes carpet has a little insulation value and so does carpet padding plus sound is dampened as well. Carpet in a rental is not the best application. More durable would be a vinyl click floor or a hardwood floor of bamboo or an exotic wood.
Depends on whats your budget for the project and who will be living in the unit. You or a tenant??? --99.56.xx.xx |

At $2.50 a square foot for materials and plus labor for installation. You would be better to remove the dry wall in the garage and the fiberglass insulation. Then have a spray foam insulation installed in the ceiling and walls of the garage IF the walls are not insulated. Then finish the ceiling 5/8" fire rated drywall and walls with 5/8" fire rated toward living space and 1/2 drywall the other garage walls This may help IF you are having cold issues in the house. Tear out drywall and fiberglass insulation in the garage on ceiling and walls. Do spray foam insulation in the ceiling and walls then drywall and mud, then paint it.
It may be more cost effective than adding a pricey fix on the floor PLUS you may fix a hidden problem due to cold and/or sound from the garage.
Then flooring choice for the room above the garage would be Vinyl Click Floor, Hardwood: Exotic or Bamboo. Are both more durable than carpet. --99.56.xx.xx |

I myself would not spend any money in the garage. I know of plenty of houses with a room above a garage and never a problem.
I also would think about what WMH said. I think we are talking about the same thing. It is actually called Lifeproof brand. They have one 100% waterproof that is thick, installs like a laminate.
Been wanting to try it. I did put a sample piece under water in a bucket for a few days.
And could not see any damage or swelling.
I think it would be excellent for insulating, waterproof and being able to handle different temperature.
It seems very similar to Coretec flooring. Which has been around awhile but is more expensive.

Sand lightly then paint is cheapest way to finish a floor, I have mostly glowing hardwoods - 3 or more layers to seal from liquid spills. --76.188.xxx.xx |

The only insulation for a bedroom above a garage is spray foam insulation which has a high R factor along excellent air sealing properties. If all the drywall is removed then it is easy to spray foam. If the floor is well insulated then there many options for flooring other then carpet. The most durable is commercial grade porcelain then hardwood flooring. For a owner occupied home carpet with under padding is a good option where a rental would not consider carpet. --147.194.xxx.xxx |

Rob, hi.if you can see your way to leave the existing carpet and pad there and go over it with 1/2" sound deadning board from Lowes or HD.they have something, just ask.And then put 3/4" Pre finished Oak hardwood over that using the nailing gun and the 2" cleats and the big hammer. It's work.but it's better than messing around with the garage, like someone suggested.no need to freeze yourself. Like Miss Ally said , a piece of electric baseboard would be a good addition, and not too hard to do.It's there if they want to use it. And to quote Roy or Sid.Easy least.........charlie................................................... --174.199.xx.xx |

I don't know much about KS but if you are looking for flooring that can be warmer, of course rug is the way to go. If the room is less than 12 feet wide (or 15 if you get that rug with) I have just cut rug and laid it in the room without pad or stretching. Easy enough to pick it up if the tenant makes a mess and lay another. Paint the floor underneath. If you can get a bound rug close to the size that might work too.
If you want to spend some money look into cork flooring. It is warmer and softer than a lot of the hard floors. Cushy vinyl might be another idea, but moving beds and dressers on it will not be good. --96.236.xx.xx |
