Tenant Mad Abt Questions (by GKARL [PA]) Posted on: Mar 13, 2018 5:18 PM Message:
Had a applicant call for a room and I go through my standard series of questions to prequalify (income, where you live and for how long, how long employed and etc). She said she had a 17 year old drug charge but has turned things around.. I told her that wouldn't necessarily stop the show and if she's turned things around, the background check will show that. However, I can promise nothing. After we got off of the phone, she texted me this:
"GKarl, I thank you for taking the time to listen, i feel u were asking too many personal questions in regards to renting a ROOM im looking for a place to live not a job or even buying a house or not moving in with anyone. Ive been judged a.lot in my life and i dont think i.should have.to.go.through all this for a place to live"
In a way, I feel sorry for her but on the other hand, if she's really turned things around, what she should be talking about is how far she's come. Given that she's taken umbrage at the questions, methinks there's more than the old drug charge. One of the things I'm noticing is that many low wage employers are hiring these folks. She claims she's been in her job for 6 years.

I'm not a fan of the "I'm sorry you were offended" non-apologies, but it seems like a situation that calls for it. "I'm sorry it was perceived that way. I have to treat everyone the same and ask everyone the same questions. You understand how it is. :)" --96.46.xxx.xx |

She knows there is more than just the old charge and is trying to put you on the defensive so you will rent to her just to show that you care and aren't judging her.But it is your building so judge away --72.231.xxx.xxx |

If she doesn't feel worthy you cant make her feel worth. Or do you want her? Then reply Standard questions,if you want to fill out application i will work to try and qualify you.

She is just generally brassed off that the world very unfairly expects her to have some consequences for her own bad actions.
She talked to you. She knows now that you are going to check up on her and won't just take her at her word. How totally unfair. --174.216.xx.xx |

WOW GKARL and NE both of PA are scammers!!!
I guess your not permitted to ask qualifying questions.
THEREFORE both GKARL and NE the next applicant that walks through your doors have pen in hand and sign the lease immediately...
...no questions are permitted!!!
...YEAH Right, prospective tenants with that attitude needs not waste my time. What do they think they can have you ignore your qualifications because they think you should not asked the questions. GKARL she has something that she knows will be a rejection in her past. I would text her back and if she wants to complete an application and pay the application fee she can let you know??? OR ignore her and move on. Her texting reaction is a red flag!!! --99.56.xx.xx |

GKARL,
Emotional problems. She did you a favor by showing her true self.
I’m still looking for a way to screen crazy. You found one!

NO "I'm sorry" for following your standard business policies. Whenever I"m tempted to say, "I'm Sorry!" these days, I try to find a way to say, "Thank you!" instead.
You are placing her in a room in a house with other people. THEY went through the questions, they have a right to expect that you are screening everyone you bring into their home.
"Thank you for your interest and good luck with your housing search!"

If a lot of people were saying too many questions , I might think they had a point...but it sounds like it was just her, so she is the one with the problem.
The drug charge was a long time ago, and she should be used to divulging whatever it is by now to employers and other people. 17 year old charge is not enough to prevent someone from getting approved for housing in a room if everything else is okay, and you even told her that. So there must be more skeletons that she isn't telling you about. Or maybe the 17 year old charge is for something serious like trafficking where she did prison time and she doesn't want you looking too deeply into that. --72.188.xxx.xx |

Renting a room in someone's home is a lot more of a problem than any of the other situations she mentioned. It means putting someone in someone else's face for 24 hours a day potentially. Glad you rejected her. --69.141.xxx.xxx |

Well J(FL) said it before I could post. She prob did jail time for whatever it was, and doesn't want you to know. Also she is super sensitive over it because of 17 years of being judged. You have a responsibility to your other tenants to turn this one down. Her touchiness would have started a fight sooner or later with someone. Maybe her 6 years at a job would prove she was financially able, but she is still emotionally unstable, and living in close quarters with strangers is a disaster waiting to happen. --108.87.xx.xxx |

J of FL, I think IF it was weed she would have most likely said it was weed due to the fact that weed is legal in most states. Forget for a minute its not legal on the fed level. People tend to be more open when discussing weed due to the fact that its legal on the state level.
There's more to the story. Bye Bye!!! next!!!
The beauty of asking pre-quailifing a tenant helps the prospect to remove themselves from the qualification process! NEXT!!! --99.56.xx.xx |
