I'm redoing hardwoods in a unit now that have TREMENDOUS pet stains.

My brother swears some are from humans. Wouldn't surprise me in this house.

We sanded one room yesterday and when we got there this morning, the urine had soaked up and out of the wood and the wood was wet.

The previous owners have been gone since June. The moisture must have been trapped under the finish of the wood. It's smelled horrible!!!

Anyway. I have to stain these puppies DARK! Is there a dark that is too dark or should I just grab the darkest stain off the shelf? It's oak.

Red mahogany is what we've used. My brother used a deep walnut stain on pet stains in his own house. Looks nice. --136.32.xxx.xxx

If it is still wet I think you are going to have to remove it,the last one I did like that when we pulled up the hardwood it was wet all underneath the flooring --72.231.xxx.xxx

Oh boy Ken, don't tell me that! Maybe I can crank the heat for a week and dry it out. It hasn't had heat all winter other than a space heater. It'll stink like he//, but it might work. --50.32.xxx.xxx

We used Jacobean, recommended by the local flooring supply house. Turned out great. We did bleach the stains first (after sanding) with peroxide. It lightened them but they were still pretty visible. I'm having a hard time visualizing a light stain working without those dark stains being really visible. --204.210.xxx.xxx

I used S.W. walnut on the last flip and it turned out nice. If you go darker

than walnut every dust bunny will show on the floor.

We design a faux parquet floor using stain. We design it so that the dark part of the pattern covers the deepest stain.

Turns lemons into lemon aid. People love it.

We refinished some that were pretty badly stained with Minwax Pentrating Stain - Dark Walnut Oil Based. I was very happy with the way they turned out. --70.178.x.xx

I second going over the stains with peroxide. It will both bleach them out and help remove the salts in the urine.

I've used minwax gunstock on several that were in tough shape. Dark enough to blend in the stains but light enough to still see some wood grain. --74.196.xx.xxx

Pickup something like this. They work.

General Tools MMD4E Moisture Meter, Pin Type

Get it dry first otherwise besides the blotchy look you could have peeling down the road.

Whatever you have to do. Fans, dehumidifier, heat etc..

I myself would go in a with garden sprayer and spray Ordor Ban all over the floor first.

Even knowing it may add a day to the drying out. --73.177.xxx.xx

If you are not in a hurry put an ozone machine in there to help with the smell, no need for intense heat just in the low 60's after you vacuum and remove the sanding debris. Then you can start with a light color wiping stain. --76.188.xxx.xx

We did a house 2 years ago. Living room & bedrooms were OK; not a lot if any stains.

The hallway on the other hand was like a pee runway. I thought we were gonna have to pull the boards & replace. Sanded a couple times. They were still there but not nearly as noticeable. But ours weren't wet either.

I think we went with Dark Walnut Minwax. Turned out fantastic. Can't tell there was a pee runway in the hallway now. --104.128.xx.xx

Jacobean.

Soak it with OdorXit because poly does not block urine odor over time.

I am redoing hardwoods for the first time and this is a good house to learn one because the floors were so stained and messed up I could only make them better even with mistakes. I went with Jacobean. I cleaned the floors with mineral spirits, let dry, then put a wood conditioner over them, let dry and my first round of stain looked awful. Very splotchy. I went over it a second time and they are starting to look really good and its now covering the stains and discolorarion. Its going to require a third coat before the top coat. --99.182.xx.xxx
