I have a leaking faucet. Any ideas how to stop the leak....I am not sure about the brand/model. Thus not sure about what cartridge is needed.

I now understand the reason folks save this info and get the same brand/model for all their properties, it makes repairs so much easier.

If you post a pic of it maybe able to tell.

But otherwise dont see how anyone can tell you.

other than tell them they can turn off the shutoff valve under the sink temporarily, until you can get it fix.

Laura,

Start by turning off the supply line for the hot or cold that is leaking. This will keep the water bill from climbing but the res can still use the other side of the faucet.

Omce the cartridge is removed the part will be easy to match.

Me? I spend an extra $20 to get a Pfister and have NEVER had a service call on one. I figure that has saved me thousand$$$.

As a plumbing contractor and landlord I have about 100 different types/sizes for faucet cartridges and hundreds of sizes of faucet seats and special washers. There is no answer without gauging the faucet make, model and part needed.

A good friend had a kitchen faucet with a separate faucet sprayer. The diverter was worn out and each time anyone turned on the faucet water came out of the sprayer-- that had to be left in the sink. So I came over with a 24 compartment container case with all sizes, shapes and type of diverters used in the manufacture's kitchen faucets. It only took me 3 minutes to take the faucet apart and 2 minutes to match it up. 5 minutes in total -- he and his family had his faucet issue for 6 years....... go figure. Landlords fix things within days. Home owners can take years....the part was the most expensive diverter, like $12. --47.156.xx.xx

Actually shutting off one side may leave the other side inoperative as many newer -water sense- faucets have a pressure balance feature that stops the faucet water passage to alert you something is wrong, this absence of water occurs when a supply line fails and floods the cabinet (the reason this kinda new idea is marketed as a -water sense- is to conserve water - imagine that, the last outlet in the passage of water stops but still the cabinet gets flooded out, not a big improvement in water sense to me....

SO anyway I will give my generic answer, find the problem and fix it. Replace the faulty rubber ring seal or repack the stem with another wrap of graphite rope or as many who can not repair something - replace it. --76.188.xxx.xx

Somewhere on the thing the brand name will be stamped. Usually right under the faucet. May need a Brillo pad to find it and a flashlight but it's there. --73.33.xxx.xxx

My experience with faucets is that if it is a single handle tap, you cant turn off just one side and not have it leak, especially if its leaking somewhere other than the spout. But maybe its brand dependant.

You could take a pic of it and then start looking on the internet for the same tap. Then you will know the brand and model.

In this case it might just be easier and much quicker to buy a new tap and install it.

I buy new taps at greatly discounted prices from kijiji or craigslist and keep a supply on hand....in case repair is not a viable option.

I've started replacing all of my faucets with Moen. That way when I get a call for a leak, I have the right cartridge with me when I show up. That said, they very rarely need to be fixed! --67.53.xx.x

I had a Moen seize up and it took an hour for the plumber to dig it out of the pipe. I posted on their facebook page about it too and they called me. Cartridges are awful no matter who makes them because tenants don't report the signs of failure such has handle hard to turn and water squirting out all over. --73.33.xxx.xxx
