We have copper pipes and get green stains if drips in bath tubs, showing copper in our water. Also they treat the water with fluorides here.

I want to filter both and I understand a reverse osmosis filter is best for doimg this. Anyone research this and have found a good one? Any regrets to the one you got over others?

We installed ours right aftrr we moved in and had one at our previous house too. We've never had any issues. I can definitely tell the difference when I get a glass of water at a friends house or almost anywhere else and can usually taste the coronation. --174.233.x.xxx

While these filter systems are great! As a plumbing contractor I've "never" found a consumer maintain these systems correctly. The different filters, membrane and storage tank all have specific requirements on maintenance and replacement. Filters need replacing every 6 to 9 months. The membrane need to be replace every 2 to 3 years. And the storage tank needs to be pressurized and checked and replaced 2 or 3 times during the life of the system. Then there are other parts that fail too.

For my tenants I like a simple single filter system, like an Ever-pure sealed cartridge.

You can send a sample of the water to a laboratory for analyses to determine what type of system you'll need to improve your drinking water experience. --47.156.xx.xx

We have well water, a little hard, but lots of dissolved iron. I actually prefer hard water, probably because I grew up with it. Soft water feels too slimy to me, I doesn't feel like the soap is rinsed. We have 2 particle filters first, since we get a black silt in the water too. Then the iron filter, which needs little maintenance. It back washes every few days and the media needs changing every 10 - 12 years. That makes the water fine for most uses except drinking. It still has a funny taste. For a long time we used a brita filter pitcher and that worked, we talked about putting one under the sink and DH got an Reverse Osmosis. Not a full house, just for drinking.

My daughter has a different type of iron, it actually comes out of the sink clear, but in 5 minutes the iron precipitates and it looks like it came from a mud puddle. She just uses a softener with iron salt in it. That works well for her.

We installed our RO filter in the basement under the kitchen sink since it would have taken a lot of cabinet space. We are happy with the RO filter. But it does waste 2 - 3 gallons of water to every 1 gallon it filters. And that is the most efficient one. Not too concerned for amount used for drinking, coffee and tea. We still cook with the faucet water. Not sure I would want to do RO with a whole house. I am sure just a carbon filter under sink would have worked just as well for us.

First, get your water tested. Until you know the exact content, you can spend way more than you need to. You might be able to get away with just a whole house particle filter (get the 4 x 20 size at least) and use a carbon filter, or a softener. I would not do a RO for the whole house unless absolutely needed. --96.236.xx.xx

We have a water softener in the garage, be sure it is separate from irrigation water or you will salt your plants.

We also have a ro purifier on the kitchen sink. Our water here is horrible, so it makes a big difference. Some people do whole house ro, but I don't feel it necessary.

We have another filter in the refrigerator but just fill water bottles from the ro and cool them.
