Is it just us, or are other landlords seeing a bunch of applicants that are on disability? I am talking 20, 30 or 40 years old that don't work, and are on disability. They can't rent from us, because their income is about $1,000 or so a month.

Is this a new trend in other places? We have to turn people down because of their income -- it is not enough to rent an apartment, pay utilities and buy groceries. Our multi units are not subsidized in any way by the government.

I want to tell them to try X apartments down the street, because they are subsidized, but I am afraid we might get into trouble with someone somewhere (people are just too thin skinned these days).

I am sure your smart enough not to suggest that. But I do understand your thinking.

My guess is we are now seeing the young kids who were receiving disability as children for things like add/adHD as adults now. I am certain that if I am wrong someone will step on and correct me but...from my understanding once they get in the disability system as a child they can stay there their entire life. --68.107.xxx.x

I have seen you get a lot of posts started here, when is the last time you thought about a landlord group in your area? You may find more than one so get to them and compare notes, here we have 2, the lawyers and expensive contractors are involved in one and the other is a wide array of owners and managers who want to solve problems in a few weeks without tossing out -other people money-, you choose one. --76.188.xxx.xx

From experience will avoid them as found many of them have serious illegal drug problems. Here those on any sort of social assistance more likely use illegal drugs along with they bring guests who use illegal drugs as well. Once the rent reaches a certain then one will get people who hav to earn for a living not being handed a cheque at the end of month. Take a look at what is living down the street then see what kind of people they are. Consider going into Google then locate along consider joining a landlords association as many newer rental housing providers often will avoid the problems and drama. It is amazing they can walk four stories then kick in a solid suite door then be on disability. It seems to be different what one considers disability. --147.194.xxx.xxx

About 5 years ago a group of 4 young people came to look at our 3 bedroom apt. Just out of high school age. Ask them about what they are doing? (We get a lot of college kids.) One was pregnant. 2 boys were on disability, one was going to apply for disability (I think the pregnant one) and one was going to look for a job.

Yeah, not in my apartment. --70.16.xx.xx

a lifetime of entitlements. The parent go Dr. Shopping just as is/was done to find a DR. willing to prescribe prescription pain meds.

Often found on the 3rd floor office in 'the hood' these guys will diagnose anyone at anytime for anything and help shepherd then thru the system.

We have seen it in action o=in the dense city populations and schools.

A friend was cleaning out a house in such an area and saw 3 able bodied looking types strolling down the streer and offered them 50./00 each for about 3/4 hours work loading a truck.

I love the way Judge Judy demands to know the "nature of their disability"? Then proceeds to berate them about it and comments about how it doesn't seem to prevent them from procreating and anything else that they want to do! We're not so lucky to be able to get away with that, but I find it interesting that people are so quick to jump into the "easy, softer way" without counting the cost. Such as limiting them to their choices in housing, etc. No, most cannot qualify for decent housing after getting on disability and don't have sense enough to realize that a lot of us are not impressed with their so called guaranteed income! (that we cannot garnish) --71.51.xxx.xxx

N&P,

Yes there are more now. In the last several years the number of recipients has skyrocketed.

Remember how Mitt Romney made the comment about the 46%? He was referring to the percentage of people receiving govt support who were not likely to vote for a conservative.

If this helps we do accept SSI, pension, or disability as income because we cannot garnish. Legal in IN - source of income is not a protected class - unless your local govt has added a protected class.

Rent on!

I read somewhere that our government gives out more money per year now to SSI than Section 8, foodstamps and Welfare combined. If this is true then why doesn't the media tell us! I have many many stories I could tell as well. Yes if they qualify I certainly will rent to them. --73.61.xx.xxx

My husband worked for 40 years as a counselor in a public mental health agency. He actually felt great sympathy and helped the truly mentally ill -- those with lifelong schizophrenia and other serious mental illnesses. In the last 5 years of his career, his agency started getting a new demographic of patients. They were gang bangers who had murdered people in their late teens or early 20s -- sentenced to 20 years in prison for their crime. They were now getting out of prison at the age of 40. They had never worked, had no skills, other than crime. They were all coming out of prison with a diagnosis of PTSD -- so they could be on disability. They did not want help, they were not mentally ill but had "personality disorders" --- no human compassion or concerns for anyone but themselves. All they wanted to know was how much money they could get out of the state. Truly evil people.

That was when he chose to retire and LL full time. --98.146.xxx.xx

These folks could be the product of pregnant women who were on drugs at the same time. I recall reading during the late 80s about children born with a cocaine and heroin habit and how sad and pathetic it was to watch babies withdraw from drugs right after birth. The ages match the time period. --73.33.xxx.xxx

My friend gets disability for her adhd, she has since 6th grade. She is now 33. She’s worked a handful of times for a month or two but it never lasts. She only gets $700 a month disability but is also on FIP and mediacaid and food stamps and free day care for her 2 year old. Now she’s pregnant again (#4) and is excited for her food stamps to go up! Lol. She talks about working someday but we know that won’t happen. Her boyfriend lives with her and works so they cheat the system... she doesn’t claim him / his income or she wouldn’t get all her benefits besides the SSI and SSA. It’s a sad world when people that CAN work choose not to! --173.26.xx.xxx

Even worse, I know people collecting disability, yet work under the table. Some with "bad back" that work physically. It is just too easy, and we don't demand anything for giving them assistance. I do remember people who wanted to avoid the stigma of being on assistance at all. And then it was just to help get you back on your feet.

Honestly, the people that use the EBT cards at the store are dressed better than I am, have their nails done, and are buying food I think is too high priced to splurge on. --96.236.xx.xx

Very common in my area / market (i.e. low income, "Class C" units). Kids are a way to provide Govt checks to parents

Fortunately, most of the "check collectors" don't have enough income to qualify, so it's a non-issue to us. If they apply and want more info why we can't approve them, I required a self-addressed, stamped envelope sent to us. Please allow up to 4 weeks for a response.

I have never gotten a letter requesting more information in 13 years. If/when I ever do get one, there will be a host of legal reasons I can cite to deny. --173.17.xx.xx

There has been a push by many states over the last several years to get people off of the welfare rolls and onto disability. Apparently welfare is more dependent upon state funds whereas disability is entirely federal. Many states hired private firms to work with these folks and coach them through the process, paying a commission to the company for each person they could get off of the state money and onto federal. --70.178.x.xx
