Here's a first for me. I love adventures...
I have been contacted by People's Court to try my small claims case. A cuckoo tenant is suing me for his furniture and clothing that he himself removed and disposed of when moving out. This should be interesting! He is quite a character. All of my expenses will be paid and I will receive $250 if I win. If he wins, they pay for his settlement.
My lawyer said it's a good deal without risk for me.
Has anyone else been involved with People's Court? --99.203.xx.xx |

On occasion I see the bumbly judge judy do cases and hardly ever does a landlord win in spite of having overwhelming evidence - me thinks on of her kids got into a apartment that was trashed and she had to pay some big bux legal fees. --76.188.xxx.xx |

I would do this. I love this show and it is lower key that Judy Judy gets. Yes, a lot of people watch this, but realistically how many are your tenants and prospective tenants. I have never seen anyone I know and if current tenants see it and it goes against you, I assume they know what a good landlord you are and would not believe it. The problem is how do you prove a negative. Take a witness if you can and any text messages, etc that prove your point, but I have also found that crazy people show up that way and I would take the chance. I have seen here before that Judge Judy never rules for landlords and that is to true. I have seldom seen her rule against a landlord for rent no matter what the tenant's complaint about the unit being in poor condition, her comment is "you ate the steak, pay for it. If it was so terrible, move." I don't always agree with her on damages. I think she feels carpet should be replaced every 5 years or so and painting is normal at every turnover which some landlords don't do. --74.140.xxx.xxx |

I love The People's Court! Judge Marilyn Milian is a very reasonable judge and I feel her rulings are just. Judge Judy, on the other hand, is a clown who doesn't even listen to the litigants and simply rules on her prejudiced, preconceived notions without regard to the facts at hand. Judge Judy needs to be put out to pasture.
I would love to appear in Judge Milian's court! --174.229.x.xx |

I think I'd go for it just for fun.
That being said, based on what you said so far, isn't this just going to come down to "he said; she said"? I mean, what is he arguing? That you took his furniture? But you're saying he took it with him?
Doesn't seem like much of a case -- even for TV -- if it comes down to you going "He took that stuff with him!" and him going "No I didn't!"
Is there more to it?
But, again, I say go for it! :)

I was invited to be on Hot Bench, but did not do it. I had a good case on collectible tenants, so I stuck with the real court and got my judgment. Of all the court TV shows, I think the People's Court is one of the most legally based and does the least to try to create extra drama between the parties. --73.102.xxx.xx |

Too many LL's on those shows get chewed on pretty hard, even when they are in the right. I don't see too many LL's come out on the winning side (admittedly, some of them don't even come close to deserving it either). For some reason, the burden of proof seems to be on the LL in all the cases. I think I would steer clear for those reasons alone. Of all of them, People's Court would be the only one considered if that situation were to arise for me. There is not a chance I would go on Judge Judy.

judge judy rules for possession for landlords ... tells the tenants if they don't like it, why did they stay. she gives basically zero for damages and repairs to the landlord.
not too long ago judge milian basically howled and laughed at a landlord attempting to retroactively charge pet deposits/fees/etc to the beginning of the tenancy (advice I see on this site quite often). she also thinks cleaning up places is a snap and she cuts way back on the fees charged --72.70.xxx.xx |

The important thing is what ( evidence) do you have? Did he give you the key when he left? Did you took picture when you were taking poses ion of the place? Is there is any witness of how was the place the day you took possession? In court evidence trump over testimonial. It is a win-win for the tenant because he will get money anyway. I would go, It would be fun to show it to friends and family but only if I win. --173.61.xxx.xxx |

Please reconsider appearing on that show. Keep in mind that the goal of this show is entertainment. It is not fairness or justice. It is not protecting the reputation of the innocent. While the plaintiff may well end up losing and looking stupid, he will have an opportunity to say dreadful and meanspirited things about you. He will try to humiliate you. On live, national TV. You may well win the case, but still come out looking mean, dishonest or stupid. Not that you are, but the plaintiff will be permitted to portray you that way in the name of entertainment. All so you can collect $250.
Future tenants will be watching that show, and even if the accusations against you are false, they will remember them and hold them against you.
I would never in a million years appear on that show. I would much prefer to go to my local court, win my case, and be done with it. But that's just me. --174.16.xxx.xxx |

You need to remember any v show needs good ratings and thus viewers.
Tv shows cater to their target audience.
Landlords are not their target audience, it's the large percentage of renter's/tenants attention they want.
It's not about justice or truth or law. It's about entertainment for their audience.
If landlords get what they deserve and ask on the show, how long do you think they'll have good ratings? Not long. This your truth and expenses are irrelevant. They have to allow landlord to win occasional but not too much or else we would never considered going on the show. But they know they won't be awarding much to landlord will give bad ratings. Stiffing the landlord on the costs of damage will make sure the audiences are pleased.
