I just had an interesting one happen. I was at my three unit doing some painting and outside the front door I hear this moo-ing noise. I thought what the heck is that? Well being out in the country, I wouldn't be all that surprised if it was random cattle, but it wasn't.

So I walk over to the front door and open it and at about 100 miles an hour in comes this stray Tom cat. Scares the ---- out of me, jumps up in the air and hisses at me with its claws out and takes off running and is now hiding in the basement of the unit! And it's just down there meowing and moo-ing and carrying on, it's face is covered in black dirt. I don't know what it has been in.

I have a feeling that it may be a cat that the owners left here back in the summer and now that we've had a lot of snow it's trying to get inside to get warm. So, tomorrow I'll set a have a heart trap with some food in it. Toss it back outside.

Strange one... I got a good laugh out of it though. --174.201.xx.xx

The black dirt could be dried blood. Tomcats make a lot of noise though. Is it a beige cat with a dark face? That would be a Siamese or Himalayan. They make more noise than an ordinary cat. Do you have the tenants phone number? Maybee they could not find the cat when they left. Could you please call animal control or are you too far back in the boondocks to have that? It could have rabies too and you don't want that in your area. Animal control will deal with it very well. Do you have SPCA nearby? They will help also. --73.33.xxx.xxx

Sounds like a feral cat. Also suspect it's injured or sick from what I am understanding from your description of sound. The problem is it has shown it will attack humans.

Feral cats may look like our fluffy little house kitties, but they no longer are. They are in essence wild animals...not strays or abandoned dumpster divers.

Imho the most humane thing you could do is have someone with excellent aim shoot it. Taking it to the pound etc. Will mean it's last few moments of life will be spent struggling to get away from the person euthanising it. Clean shot, instant death would be more humane. --68.107.xxx.x

Not only do cats get rabies, an animal rescue woman got it in this town and died from it. In fact, I went to the pet store the day they had cages full of kittens there years ago. One was having trouble lifting it's feet and putting them back down. I told that to a rescue person sitting next to the cage. I said that this kitten is having a problem. So she asks me do I want to hold it. No thank you, it's obviously sick. Well not too many months her obituary and a story appeared in the local paper. She had died of rabies. Did I want to hold a sick cat? Hell no. I tried to warn her but people don't want to listen. No one likes the messenger with bad news. Often, that is what I am. --73.33.xxx.xxx

Outside.

If you take it to a pound it will be killed.

There is not truth to no-kill shelters. Look into it and you will find there are a few criteria if the animal doesn't meet...it is killed.

Animals know what to do do, especially the ones wearing fur coats. --74.96.xxx.xxx

If it is an ill feral, the best thing to do is to make sure it is euthanized. Whether by someone with a firearm, or a shot at the vet, it needs to be let go.

Ferals that attack humans are bad news.

No it will not be welcomed at a barn! I lived on a farm. People were always leaving unwanted cats outside our farm thinking the same reason, we had far too many. Had to do the same trap them and take them to shelters. We had no kill shelters near there.

I never met a farmer that wanted "another mouser" as I have heard non farmers would talk about. --71.192.xxx.xxx

You may want to check for a shelter in your area and call them they may stop by to pick it up because you trap the cat it may be back on the porch the next time you are there to do work.
